School teaches kids “the government gives us rights

The concern is not about telling kids about their rights but telling them that our rights come from our government.

That's what I thought the issue was but you mentioned the Declaration of Independence which confused me a little. Regardless, it was fleshed out more in the thread. I'm with ya.

ITL, I disagree with you totally. It's not a "right", but unmerited favor. I guess we could beat that horse forever, but…..

Like a lot of things in the Bible, there are verses that support both our views.

And what of the unsaved ? What is their collective
right ?

Their God-given right? To go to Hell, like you said.

Back to the OP....it seems the God-given rights are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, according to the Declaration of Independence, and the proof is that the Declaration of Independence says so. That's circular reasoning.

Who said that?

Where Did These Truths Come From?

Life: It was the Bible that taught them the sacredness of human life (Leviticus 24:17, Psalm 139:13–16).

Verses in Psalms only say that God creates life. Verse in Leviticus says that man does not has a right to live if he takes life.

The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away. Job 1:21

Liberty: It was the Bible that ingrained in them deeply the emancipatory theme of “liberty for the captives” (Luke 4:18) that runs through the whole of redemptive history.

Verse is a reference to Isaiah 61:1-2. Jesus is saying that salvation will come through him and hope to the oppressed and sick. Not that everyone has an inherent right to be free from kings (which is the intent of the clause in the Declaration.)

1 Peter 2:13 Submit yourselves for the Lord’s sake to every human authority: whether to the emperor, as the supreme authority,
Pursuit of Happiness: And it was the Bible that taught them that the ultimate pursuit of an individual’s life is to find joy (Psalm 16:11, Psalm 37:4, Psalm 73:25–26, Matthew 13:44, John 10:10, John 15:11, Philippians 1:21, Philippians 3:8).

Too bad those verses don't say that God has given us the right to pursue happiness. They say that true happiness will be found in the Lord.

I agree. It's what happens when people who don't read the Bible build laws upon it.

Wonder how it would effect this debate if we changed the wording in the first sentence?

Let's say we replace the words "God-given freedoms" with the words "unalieanable rights".

The first sentence would then read . . .

Unalieanable rights are in fact "special privileges" granted by the state, says handout"

Would the arguments change?

God-given freedoms are in fact "special privileges" granted by the state, says handout

A handout given to second grade children at a school in Fairfield, Connecticut states that “the government gives us rights,” a disturbing example of how kids are being miseducated about their constitutional freedoms in America.

democrats been preaching and practicing that since the days of FDR!

Try living in a country with few if any rights and see where they come from ... or do not come from.

The Right to Life in this country was taken away by "Seven Black Robed Men" in 1973 and that abominable act has been enthusiastically championed and even celebrated by the democrat party. 55,000,000 babies slaughtered in the most unsafe place in the world: A woman's womb. The chance of surviving there is only about 65%. May God grant these people their just deserts!

In the first draft of the Declaration Of Independence Jefferson wrote

“We hold these truths to be sacred and undeniable; that all Men are created equal and independent, that from that equal creation they derive rights inherent and unalienable, among which are the preservation of life, and liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.”
