Schools under fire for Allowing Churches to feed Football Team

Wisconsin-based group has accused a Georgia high school football coach of violating the First Amendment by allowing local churches to prepare meals for his team.

The Freedom From Religion Foundation sent a letter to the superintendent of Walker County Schools demanding an “immediate investigation” into Ridgeland High School football coach Mark Mariakis.

The FFRF is a Wisconsin-based group whose purpose is to “protect the constitutional principle of separation between state and church.”

They are demanding the school system launch an investigation into allegations that Coach Mariakis allowed local churches to prepare pre-game meals for his football team. They also allege that the coach prayed with his team, used Bible verses in motivational speeches and on team shirts and participated in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

Yeah, the folks from Wisconsin came to our hometown b/c of the EVIL CHRISTMAS STUFF ON OUR COURTHOUSE LAWN!!!

I like these folks about as much at Fred Phelps' crowd.

Maybe instead of deer hunting, they need to go canoeing. With John Voight. And Burt Reynolds. THAT ought to shut 'em up.

It's crazy.It's like they are saying: " Hey Georgia. We're up here in Wisconsin and we hear y'all been letting them there church folks prepare and feed football teams dinner. We don't like that so y'all stop it."

Would it bother anyone if the coach was a Muslim- and prayed with the players?

If your son was on such a team, how would you counsel him?

Why can't the churches just bring or drop off the food to the school? In spite of the protests of the Georgia folks, there is a line being crossed here regardless of the good intentions and traditions of the folks serving the meals.

A public school teacher should not be have a team activity at a church of any kind. He is responsible for a lot of things, but exposing the team to religion which prayers and church buildings does, isn't one of them.

Be creative, if indeed it is about just serving a meal to a bunch of hard working kids, there are ways to do that without using anyones church facilities.
