Scripture Memorization at your Bible College

...as unpopular as it will be to suggest it, rote memorization of passages of text you don't really understand is not near as meaningful as some think it is.
Knowing how to understand and apply Scripture you don't have memorized is a better skillset.
I don't disagree, but would suggest that these concepts are not mutually exclusive. If we can combine memorizing and understanding and knowing how to apply, it should be an improvement on all counts.

You are certainly correct here, I just don't think we need spend hundreds or thousands of dollars for professors to insist we memorize what it cost $.25 a week in Awana to learn.

Indeed, but we can do that without the aid of Bible Colleges or Seminary. I paid for their knowledge (in my mind) not to be told to memorize text. I could memorize text in elementary school. But, certainly, we need ultimately to combine both skillsets. Thanks for your reply :)

Part of a degree is that the institution tested things that they didn't teach, but are essential for the profession?

Of Course AWANA today looks NOTHING like it did when I was in it. In my opinion, the program has changed for the worse.
Love the new High School program - with videos accompanying each lesson. Top drawer and relatable/teachable for modern students!

But am prejudiced since my son is the creator. An example of his teaching (sitting on the steps at my house in Casper, Wyoming)

I should have specified the Elementary Program. I was never in it beyond 6th Grade as we moved and that churched had Christian Service Brigade.

Wouldn't it be an assumption to think that all seminarians have an undergraduate degree that is Bible related though?

Let me rephrase

Churches should encourage members to memorize scripture either thru SS or Worship or whatever

To not do so is malpractice IMO

Yes, again any christian that has been a believet for any length of time should know 25-30 verses

You would be shocked at the people I mwt, their reasons for attending seminary, and their understanding of the Gosp

I am becoming increasingly difficult to shock. Part of getting my faith back was seeing just how shocking outside the church could get, so that I could have more tolerance for what I see inside the church.
