Let's celebrate the good Adolph Hitler did. He did a lot, believe it or not. We can also celebrate the good Stalin did. I am not celebrating any preacher who has the personal life King had.
I don't know of any lasting good Hitler did or see any rational comparison between the two circumstances, me thinks you merely look for absurdity, but feel free to disagree with the Biblically based reasoning as I presented it. Remember that I stated I would not name the holiday after MLK - so then it logically follows I don't attribute the end result to the man but only let the good shine through out of the darkness.

Because of Hitler, we now have the nation of Israel.

I was not and never have been a fan of a MLK holiday and live in that last state (AZ) to make it one which only happened under the pressure of the NFL boycotting our state. For one, I simply thought there was too much hoopla being made out of him and I had heard he was no angel in private life. Also, I just didn’t think he stood out that much as deserving a holiday named after him and thought the motives were merely political. Only 2 men in our history have the honor of a paid national holiday named after them, Washington and Columbus and I don't think MLK raises to that level. Although, I did like the idea of another paid holiday and was not opposed to calling it a Civil or Human Rights Day and did see MLK as somewhat championing that cause.

Why do you believe Columbus is worthy of honour when MLK is not? The discovery of America was doubtless a historically important event and to a certain extent necessary inasmuch as it eventually resulted in the existence of this country but it was accompanied by much evil including genocide, slavery, rape, and a host of other sins of which Columbus was not innocent. Was Columbus very historically important (just like MLK)? Yes, but I don't see why his actions merit celebration to the extent of having a national holiday.

Your version of the history surrounding Columbus is skewed at best and never appeared on the scene until the early 70's. Be careful what you believe.

I don't think every evil attributed to Columbus is true. Also as is evident by this thread, views of Martin Luther King are also changing, dependent on new research and findings.
