Police: Church officials didn't report sex abuse

Baptist pastor and three elders charged with failing to report child sex abuse, prosecutor says shameful conspiracy

CONWAY – The pastor and three elders of a church in Redstone were arraigned yesterday on charges they failed to report an alleged case of sexual abuse when they became aware of it last summer.

The four men belong to Valley Christian Church, located on East Conway Road in a warehouse it shares with an automotive service shop.

In separate arraignments yesterday afternoon, church Pastor Timothy Dillmuth, 33, of Stowe, Maine, and elders Richard Eland, 61, of Brownfield, Maine; Michael Wedge, 32, of Conway; and Robert Gagnon, 69, of Brownfield were each charged with a single misdemeanor count of violating a state law requiring them to report child abuse to authorities.

"This statute absolves each of us as to whether or not we should report (abuse)," Conway Police Department prosecutor Jessica Hollenkamp said in court. "A conspiracy that blatantly disregards that is not only unlawful, but shameful."

Two women, one of whom identified herself as Dillmuth's wife, were in court, shaking their heads as the charges were read.

According to its Web site, Valley Christian Church is affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention and the Baptist Convention of New England and includes ministries for men, women and children.

Bail for Dillmuth was set at $5,000 cash or corporate surety. In arguing for that amount, Conway police Sgt. Terry Spittler said "the charge is very significant" because of its "conspiratorial nature." All the men are prohibited from having contact with one another, as well as the alleged victim and her family and children younger than 18. Dillmuth and Eland, who coordinates drug and alcohol abuse programs, were concerned about their ability to carry out their church responsibilities.

Judge Pamela Albee told them that if they were to come in contact with one another, it would be a violation of their bail conditions.

Eland's and Gagnon's bail was set at $2,000 cash or surety and Wedge's was set at $1,000 cash or corporate security.

According to the court complaints against the men, they "knowingly have reason to suspect" that a child was a victim of felonious sexual assault and that they "neglected to report" the case to authorities.

Investigators did not say how they became aware of the abuse allegations, but that a separate investigation is ongoing and no arrests have been made.

I'm not defending child molesters. You just can't see that the same thing goes on in your so called 'bible churches'. The RCC is so much larger than the Baptists churches and of course much deeper pockets.

He is speaking of an individual failing as opposed to an institutional, corporate failing. The Roman Catholic "church" as a whole from pope on down.

One difference is that in the RCC, the priest is an employee of the RC Church - who has authority over him. So when a RC priest is assigned to a new church in a different location, the congregation cannot reject him. Its much like the military - the Army give you orders, you report to your new duty station, and you are accepted without question (unless someone there knew you at a previous base). A Baptist church Pastor is only accountable to his own church. There is no authority of an association or denomination to prevent a church from accepting a new pastor that might have a cloudy past. Then it becomes the responsibility of the new church do do a complete background check on a prospective pastor.

for one, no one has spent decades trying to cover up while putting pedophiles back with children to do more then fondle them, unless you look at the rcc, which has done exactly that. rcc, talk about a cess pool, everyone covering up whats been done to hundreds of children, and defending these priests, them never having to ansswer for it, and being moved and protected from prosecution, cess poll, all of them.

You would like nothing better than to keep the topic off pedophile Baptists pastors and on pedophile priests. The fact is that it is just as bad if it happens in Baptist churches as it is in the Catholic. The cover ups have happened in Baptist churches too as I have documented them. Deal with it!

How dare you suggest that I accept pedophilia! I have never suggested that it is 'ok' for abuses to happen or be covered up in ANY church.

Personally, I don't know ANY child molesting priests. If I did, I certainly would do more than write the Vatican. You seem to think that every other Catholic priest is a child molester. The statistics indicate that only 3% or less of Catholic clergy have any involvement, that leaves 97% or more that are not part of that cesspool.

When you paint the whole Catholic Church as a cesspool (and you and Alive in Christ's posts seem to indicate that) then I take offensive. You wouldn't like it if Catholics did the same on Catholic boards. I suggest you go visit a Catholic board and see how charitably non-Catholics are treated. Tell me which shows the love of Jesus.

Many members of this board are abrasive and rude towards Catholics. It's sad.

Not in the least. But the failings that we evangelicals have seen are miniscule in comparison to the Catholic failings. It would be like a speed bump in comparison to Mount Everest. The Catholic problem is SOOO much more slimy, on many different levels.

We DON'T do whatever it takes, on a massive scale, to get rid of, or cover up the problem, like...

* Quietly shuffling the molesters off to another parish in an attempt to protect the reputation of the so called "Holy (cough cough) Mother Church".

* Pay off victims with hush money in return for their silence.

* Threaten victims into silence by telling them that if they talk they will be excommunicated from *cough cough* "Holy Mother Church, which *supposedly* means Hell for eternity.
