Oil-for-food report calls for UN shake-up

A report into the United Nations' oil-for-food program for Iraq says the UN urgently needs wide-ranging reforms and stronger leadership.

The finding is the result of an investigation which was headed by the former chairman of the United States Federal Reserve, Paul Volker.

In the report, the investigators say the UN was asked to do too much too soon in running the program - the largest humanitarian operation ever carried out by the organisation.

The report documents serious instances of illicit, unethical and corrupt behaviour within the UN.

This latest report calls for stronger executive leadership.

It points out that while the secretary general is supposed to in charge of administration, in reality his diplomatic responsibilities are all-consuming.

A spokesman for the UN secretary-general Kofi Annan says they would only comment after seeing the whole report, which is expected to run to nearly 1,000 pages.

The U.N. is a corrupt ineffective organization. IMHO the best option for the USA is to first get out and second boot them out.

Interestingly the opinion of a number of Aussies is that we would be better off out of it, but we will see what happens, probably nothing!
