I don't remember this being in the news, but religious arbitration was outlawed in Ontario this February.

Sharia law as proposed to be applied in western countries is about civil familial arbitration and mediation. The rest of sharia law obviously is in opposition to the laws of western countries and cannot be applied.

Why can't sharia law be applied again? Just because there are now existing laws? So these laws are impossible to repeal, just like sharia law?

It's a GOOD thing Ontario and Hampshire don't call the shots. Jeez.

What do you mean by applied again?

The proposed use of sharia law in Ontario and now in England is that in cases where both parties wish to settle a civil dispute outside of the public court system, they would be allowed do so under a religious court and have that recognized as legally binding.

None of the laws of the religious court would ever be written into government laws and they would hold no sway over anyone who did not wish to settle a dispute under those laws.

Ontario banned the use of sharia law and any other religious court for this purpose.

But sharia law isn't necessary when you already have the rule of law in place in countries where there has been the rule of law for hundreds of years. The attempt by muslims (and others) to insert sharia law (for arbitration) in the West is just a way to get a foothold into a Western nation's legal system and it is a slippery slope. First "arbitration and mediation" and then eventually the whole kaboodle.

To further expound, I don't see where sharia law is necessary in any nation. But for all of you who are such proponents of instituting sharia law in the West, why don't you go live in some country where sharia is the law of the land and see how much you like living under it? Even for a month. You just might find what you think it is isn't all it's cracked up to be - especially if you happen to be a woman.......

Once satan gets a foothold, he soon has a stronghold and sharia law is satanic.

Even if they tried to do this, they would fail unless there was a political majority seeking to do this.

The more rational view would be that muslims see that Jewish and Christian religious tribunals were voluntarily available to settle familial civil arbitration and mediation agreements in the past and wish to have equality shown with their version of a religious tribunal available as well.

This forces governments to deal with the whole issue of religious tribunals and either allow those of all religions or none. Ontario has chosen to allow none.

Ontario did a good thing. Now what those who are in favor of sharia law need to do is compare Jewish and Christian tribunals to Muslim tribunals, especially when it comes to domestic matters such as treatment of women and children. Then the differences between C/J versus muslim tribunals and the application of the different laws would be readily apparent for all to see. I believe US Law is founded on C/J law but an interesting thread would be to compare the differences with examples.

I agree that Ontario did the right thing. I am not in favour of using sharia law for settling civil disputes.

What I do not like is the misinformation and misrepresentation that occurs on these threads.

At least we agree that Ontario did the right thing.

And on that note, as per previous warning, this thread is closed. If someone wants to start a thread comparing Jewish and Christian tribunals to Muslim tribunals, please feel free.
