Shocking news Re: The Passion of Christ!

This just blows my mind! Can someone confirm this for me? I have been told that in the movie they completely skipped the part about darkness being upon the land for three hours!


Remember when Jesus told his disciples “fear not what man can do unto you, but fear him who is able to destroy both body and soul in hell”? (quoting from memory, so check a KJV for the exact quote)

Ether Jesus was a hypocrite OR he was troubled about something OTHER than what men were about to do to him, when he prayed in the garden! Cm-on people, have you followed the crowd for so long that you no longer have the ability to discern?


FYI all the physical things done to Jesus was nothing compared to what happened in the darkness! “He who knew no sin became sin”, the wrath of a holly and justly offended God was unleashed upon his only begotten son…during those hours of darkness and then Jesus cried with a loud voice MY GOD MY GOD WHY HAST THOU FORSAKEN ME?

I saw the movie this afternoon.

They didn't skip over it, exactly. They didn't explain it as three hours of darkness but they did portray it as darkness and they put it into a montage combining it with the renting of the Temple Veil.

Yes, they showed the darkness very clearly. And showed the Roman soldiers and others running in fear. No, there was not an explicit statement that the darkness was 3 hours long.
(Nor was there such an explicit statement in Ben Hur when that movie showed the darkness. Actually I remember that scene as being shorter than in The Passion.)

i remember this scene in the preview where a special effects magic ball shoots around the 3 crosses on Calvary. cldn't figure out what it was all abt, but then they'd warned us that the preview was only a 98-99% complete version--n also the special effects were part of that incompleteness. i do wonder if that's part of the "darkness" bit.

but another thing he skipped out was the part of Joseph of Arimathea seeking permission for Jesus' body to be taken down. there wasn't enuff time for that as Mel rushed to get straight to this icon of Tradition Romanism--the Pieta tableau. down came the body fr the cross n into Mary's hands, n presto, the perfect Michaelangelo statue pose straight outta St Peter's Basilica.

at the loss of some biblical accuracy, this is nonetheless quite an achievement in cinematic art, i'd say ...

one reviewer protested that when Jesus said "I am," his enemies did not fall back, as in the gospel accounts. did they fall back in the final form of the movie?

well, i guess u have to take all the Jesus movies for what they're worth. the film version can never do full justice to the gospel accounts, n the closest wld probably be a movie like The Gospel of John. Mel prob knew the limitations when he made the movie, n he worked within what the genre allows to communicate his point--the physical pain of it all.

but u do have a point. how wld u depict that abandonment by the Father? a writhing form on the cross in deep shades of blue like in the opening scene of THe Passion? a close-up on Jesus' face, His quivering lips? in slo-mo? then again, we'll havta be careful or run the risk of creating the gratuitous.

Well, if my son had been crucified, I would have held his dead body to my heart. If my son dies before I do, I will hold his dead body to my heart. He is my son and I am his mother. He is part of me. I gave birth to him. That's just the way it is for this mother and my son. And I'm not Catholic. I go to see the movie tomrrow.

I'd say this is another gross distortion by Mel & Company. Even Ted Koeppel (?) on Dateline knew that Pontius Pilate was the "Barbaric Butcher of Rome's Empire" and crucified thousands mercilessly.

But in the "P" film, Mel wants to whitewash the Romans, it seems.

Anyone who saw film, since I never will, gotny comments on this? Is it fair criticism of "P"?

What a farce. Mary would not defile herself as Jew, since cadavers were unclean. Mary did not touch the dead body of Jesus.

Why did Jesus say "Touch me not" or "Cling not to me" to Mary of Magdala after Resurrection?

Old Testament forbids any Hebrew from touching a dead body, requires ceremonial cleansing , etc. if it cannot be avoided.

See, this is why I keep telling you that you shouldn't comment on the movie without seeing it.

There is no scene where Mary touches Jesus' body. The scene goe straight from His body on the cross to the tomb.

Once again, your opinion on this matter holds no weight.

Mike--I believe Vespers argument was concerning the pic that Forever posted---Mary holding the dead corpse of Jesus---clearly, clearly not in the "Passion"----clearly, clearly not in the Bible---not one shred of evidense pointed that way!

In both cases vaspers, absolutely not. As a matter of fact, the Romans were depicted in the most horrible light possible. They were cruel and inhumane, as was Pontius Pilate - through his voluntary impotence as a leader.

If anything, this movie may drive me to be "anti-italian." (Just joking, of course)

I heard Mary mops up His blood in the "P" movie. Any OT scholars out there? Isn't this also a defilement similar to touching a corpse?

You "heard" alot of stuff...why don't you get it over with and SEE the movie...ALL of your questions will be answered and you will be better prepared to discuss it. Consider it "research".

Many who had not yet seen the "P" film raved about it. I never demanded that they see it first before they commented on it. not once did i do this. See?
