Should A Pastor Be Paid?

A priest generally should not be given a becoming salary, that is beyond a mere living that would potentially make him independently wealthy. Surplus revenues for property and share portfolios etc.

Apart from the distraction and temptations of worldly accumulation, it goes against the gospel message of laying up treasures in heaven.

Nothing makes a sheep spit it’s cud and narrow its eyes like a Magnum PI pastor roosting the tires of his Ferrari off a luxury estate, to get to his 50 million dollar aircraft.

Greed like all deadly sins, GROW, that’s what makes them so deadly, and eventually consumes the whole soul, till there is only clawing appetite left, the image and light of God effaced.

You can not have any even small part with them, they grow, they always grow.

This is not just a lesson for Pastors, it’s a lesson for all of us.

Where so ever a man’s treasure is, there you will find his heart.

I should have elaborated. Stipends, or living expenses are paid, today this would include medical insurance.
Also, costs for annual holidays for when a priest might fly back to their countries to visit their families. Which is a growing trend.
Sums set aside for retirement etc There are in-house plans in the Church for this.

Another one is parish pilgrimages where parishes will pay for their priest to spiritually direct their pilgrimage to the Holy Land etc.

I am constantly amused how scripture shows wealthy women helping the Apostles and believers, and how those wealthy women are still doing their part in the life of the Church today.

Parishes need to be run by parishioners, for some time priests were burdened with all the administration in places, this is wrong. A priest is not meant to administer the parish, but be free to administer the Sacraments and carry out his pastoral work.

Well said. Amen.
