Should Christians Recite the Pledge of Allegiance?

Considering the hoopla over the school in New York having students recite the pledge in Arabic, it got me thinking, should Christians recite the pledge? Is it a form of idolatry or just something a good citizen should do?

In James 5:12 we are reminded to not swear or take an oath ..... and many take that to mean our pledge. There are quite a few verses on this, so one must be careful to what and whom they vow or swear an oath to.

There is no good reason not to. Not even close to being idolatry or any other kind of sin.

I was just thinking about that.
Was also thinking about going to court and swearing on the Bible.
How about an oath of office?
How about being licensed as an officer of the court?
What about the Hippocratic oath?

It's not idolatry to make a speech which essentially is just acknowledging the responsibility you are about to undertake for whatever the occasion.

I think that the Jehovah's Witnesses are exempt by federal court ruling from saying the pledge or saluting the flag under the 1943 case West Virginia State Board of Education v. Barnette.

The way that I understand that case, everyone is exempt if they so choose.

Look for the religious left to join their equals the Jehovah's Witnesses in refusing to pledge allegiance or salute the American flag.

so would it be hypocritical for them to accept services from those who are required to make an oath? Like soldiers, police officers, doctors, etc...

If instead of allegiance the word deference or respect were to be used, would that make a difference for those saying no, to reciting the pledge.

For those saying yes, how far does your allegiance go?

I'm fine with those who choose not to recite the pledge, this a free country after all.

Actually, the law says that everyone is exempt but so far only Jehovah's Witnesses have used the law to any extent.

It might be a good idea for someone who is confused about God's place in their life to avoid any pledge or vow. Including marrriage.
