History is repaeting itself. At one time it was not permissible to speak another language in public other than English. That was about 60 years ago.

Hmmmmmmmm, I am over 60 and that sure was not true of any place I knew about. There were German UmPaa bands on the radio, especially in Pennsylvania, and the commentary was in German.

Chinese has always been spoken in Chinese restaurants and laundries ... Cantonese primarily when I was a kid.

Gully was spoken on the Outer Banks and a few other places.

Latin was spoken in the RCC Mass ... and surely that was public.

Where was English required in public?

I know of a family in which the mother and father were here illegally, had a child , was working and supporting their family, got caught up in a raid, and now the child is looking at being deported with her family back to a place in Honduras where they will have to literally live on a garbage heap. The child is in the 4th Grade, and is a straight A student, speaks English well, and is a lovely child. Please put yourself in this child's shoes.. Something is definitely wrong with this picture..

Let me highlight for you what is wrong with this picture. Look at the bolding it tells the whole story.

The reason they are here illegally, doesn't overcome the fact that they are here illegally and now the consequence for the parents' breaking the law is that child must suffer. Is it fair to the child. No. But since when is life fair? The parents should have considered what might happen when they came here and didn't seek asylum when they came across the border.

America is a country of laws. There are consequences to breaking them. Is it fair to the child sitting in foster care because his parents are meth addicts? How about the family of a local man who was convicted of obstruction of justice because he failed to think things though before he called an associate he'd found was being investigated by the feds? He's spending 5-7 in a federal prison for ONE phone call that he didn't even know was illegal.

Life is not fair.

It is not fair that American tax payers must pay for the education of children of illegal immigrants. It is not fair that we taxpayers must pay for their medical care. Think we don't? Go ask any hospital administrator how much money they spend each year on people who come to the ER with no identification whatsoever. But they HAVE to be treated BY LAW.

You think Obamacare is bad? You ain't seen the tip of the iceburg that is already bearing down on us. We spend BILLIONS each year on people who come across our borders KNOWING they are breaking the law. But its worth the risk, cause Americans aren't going to do anything about it.

Yes, there are sad stories out there everywhere. But if we are a nation of laws, then what does it say about our intergrity when we toss those laws aside and ignore them?

I just disagree.. nothing personal.. I think there is a higher moral law than our border laws. That law is found in Matt 25 on how we are supposed to treat others like Christ. And in that passage, Christ says that nations will be judged on how they treat strangers...

Now what is a "stranger" to a nation? It is an alien, a foreigner.
Nowhere in the Bible are we given an exemption as a nation to ignore common moral law to help others if they are not documented.

I think the higher law of treating your neighbor as yourself trumps our border laws.
Someone may say, "well, the people here illegally are not my neighbor"...
Someone once asked Jesus, "And who is my neighbor" in order to get out of a responsibility, and Jesus replied with the Good Samaritan story.

I see a lot of similarities between the way Samaritans were treated and the way Hispanics in this part of America are treated.

Also notice that we are to care for people who are in prison.. What are they doing in Prison? They broke the law... therefore the principle is that even though someone breaks the law does not mean we don't care for them, and help them become better human beings.

Also, this passage was written to nations.. NOT individuals... so we as a nation are going to be held accountable for the way we treat immigrants.

Huh, how we treat immigrants isn't in question. We treat the legal ones just fine. Its how we treat those who are basically invading our country that is in question.

We already allow in legally far more Mexican immigrants than those from any other county. Far more! Read the stats. I dont' think God is criticizing America for her lack of compassion toward foreigners! Nearly a million people a year become citizens of this nation. What other country allows that many immigrants?

I'm all for being helpful and compassionate, but this comes down to being taken advantage of because it is easier to come here illegally than to meet the requirements that a million other people found it easy enough to do.

I am not very many eyars younger than you and students were not allowed to speak anything other than English in School. That same area speaks about 178 different languages today. If they were unable to speak English they could not speak another language either. I was also told that same story by an immigrant from Switzerland who is now in his 80's. He lived in a different area than I did.

It had nothing to do with that at the time. That was the attitude in America at the time. It was much the same attitude as those in the south who wanted segregation.

In the school I taught at they do not have the same rules as they once did years earlier.

I taught in a high school that had about 95 of its students who were born in Mexico. They were far more respectful than those born in America.

Schools require many things - and I'm sure you may remember in the good 'ole days - a decent dress code, corporal punishment, actually accomplishing a standard to be passed on to the next grade, and they would not allow you to throw cafeteria food away.

I do not know what country you live in but it is still that same way in some of the more conservative states today.
Of course you do know that the apple does fall from the tree. When you get a chance take a look at the states where the highest teenage pregnancies are. It might surprise you as it did me.
