Did he seriously call us out on Native Americans???? We treated them better than Rome did Anabaptists and other Protestants. Or is it OK to kill and take the property of people of different religious beliefs, but not race?I have to Google this......
Oh wait it seems the Pope was indirectly saying that.
"The core purpose of Serra's work was to purge the region of its native culture and install the church in its place. For this reason, some American Indian activists were*fiercely opposed*to the canonization;*"
"The missions ended up killing about 90% of the California Indians present at the time of missionization, creating all kinds of cultural and emotional baggage that we still carry to this day," Miranda said."
"They're interested in his record and in how many people he managed to convert and in the fact that he at this point in time is a famous Spanish person when the church really needs some positive PR, so they are purposely overlooking the deaths and the cultural genocide of Native American people because it's to their benefit."
"...before he(pope) did, he took a step to acknowledge the nation's often horrific treatment of American Indians. America, he argued, should demonstrate a sense of compassion it so rarely showed during the colonization of the continent:"
America should have compassion.... But the church....not so much. The guy lectures the US while making a saint of a guy who led missions that apparently killed 90% of native Americans they came across?
