As for the Super Bowl, I am tired of the vulgar surprises and displays of childish behaviors on behalf of the so-called professional musicians and groups that turn an entertaining event into some kind of personal dais to shock the world, with foul gestures or political statements! And while I didn't tune in to the Grammy's, I couldn't help but see the story on Nicki Minaj and her so-called excorcism.

As one commentator said, if she and the network had pulled that stunt with Mohammad and the Muslim religion, all you-know-what would have broke loose!

Has the time come to use country music stars, for halftime spectaculars? After all, these stars love this country (for the most part) and usually don't do things that give this country a "black-eye" around the world. Or should we just by-pass the entertainemt side of these events, all together?

Today's prima donnas are seem to be entitled, and immature, and for me, they continue to embarrass me when the resort to their antics while on air. :BangHead:

SO, what are your thoughts? I realize that we can simply turn these shows off, but is that fair to the decent, hardworking folks that have values and morals and enjoy watching the Super Bowl and award shows? :type:

Refusing to watch the Super Bowl and other such events doesn't help. After the Super Bowl, local channel news played the clip of the obscene jesture over and over again. Only faintly blurring the offensive part. Just like they pretend to bleep offensive language these days.

Local news also showed the Pope & whatever that other costume is supposed to be over and over again, too. However, they didn't explain what it was supposed to represent. Guess they didn't want southern Bible believing folks to know exactly what was going on. All we needed to know was there were some "strange" (my word) outfits worn for the awards.

Right now, I can't see any of it changing. The love of money is the root of all evil. For the Super Bowl, the more outrageous, the more can be demanded for the commercials. A friend said he didn't watch the game, but tuned in for the half-time entertainment.

The more outrageous the behaviour, the more of xyz will sell.

Sodom and Gomorrah come to mind, as I type. How much longer will God be patient with what's going on in this world today?

A few years ago I attended the funeral of a man who claimed to be Baptist. His mother was hard core Catholic.

During the service this woman went to yelling and screaming and howling and wailing and crying and sobbing and got weak in the knees and fell out in the pew, disrupted the service a couple of times and by the time the service was over it took two husky men to get her out of the church and into the Limousine. Don't 'cha know there was a rerun at the grave site.

I can certainly understand a mother being extremely distraught at the loss of a child but I did consider this performance a bit over the top. In discussion a couple of days later it was mentioned that "religious" people, absence that Saving Knowledge of Jesus always perform as this woman did. They have no hope!

Perhaps all those people who go absolutely nuts over a football game with the outrageous half time shows putting forth all that nonsense are just testifying to the world that they have no hope.

I only have one expectation from heathens, and that's heathens will act like heathens, especially "artists"

Funny you should mention this. Several years ago I got upset with my cable company and called to unplug me. The woman on the phone was absolutely distraught over my request! :laugh::laugh::laugh:

"Well, what are you going to do?" she asked. My response? "Antenna".

We got it all worked out and I've still got cable but the whole conversation was funny. About the only time you can see kids out playing in the yards is when a bad storm comes through and the power is off.

Goodness, hubby and I turned on the Grammys around 10:30 Eastern time - just as Tony Bennet and Carrie Underwood sung. LOVELY!!! Watched a few performances and figured we were getting old then that Nicki Minaj thing happened and we shut it off. That was horrible!! Yes, you are right RD - if it were a Muslim thing, it would have been all over the news and she would have been strung up by her hair extentions!!! But for a church? Yeah - it's fine.

But this is the way of Hollywood. Anything goes. "We are just reflecting society." No they are not. They are DIRECTING society. That is scary.

One thing that was good with watching the Grammys though was that Bob found out that a guy he once worked with passed away when they did that montage of those who passed away this year. He will be sending a card to his family now. He just saw him at a trade show last year and he had no idea.

I think we all need to realize that this kind of thing is just going to keep happening, and we need to be able to stifle our righteous indignation enough to honestly engage the culture around us, instead of just whining and moaning about it. We're not going to effect change with complaining and politicking. Only honest and gracious engagement with the culture is going to help us here.

On a side note, I saw the NM thing and, yeah, it was pretty horrible. My wife and I just tuned it out while it was on. But I really liked the nice tribute to Glen Campbell. What a real star and legend he is.

My friend. I somewhat agree. If I am engaging the culture by preaching the gospel, then I expect to see and hear various things, but if I am just engaging culture; just to engage then I cannot grieve the Holy Spirit.

We didn't watch the halftime show during the Super Bowl because its a waste of time. I've never really watched the Grammys so that wasn't a big deal...however, I was flipping through the channels that night (one of my shows had just ended) and I caught thirty seconds of the "show" by Nicki whatever.

I wasn't at all surprised.

When pop culture goes slumming they run to the one institution they know they can easily, openly offend without consequence or a truly negative reaction...the Church/Christians. It is really a sad commentary on the lack of ability on the Grammys part to air this kind of thing. One of my friends (not a believer) who is really into hip-hop culture told me that he was really angry that the one shot the Grammys had to showcase hip-hop was so terrible. The whole thing was badly performed and just a Satanic attack on believers.

So what do we do? Personally, I've cut my tv viewing back to almost nothing. I don't have cable because we have Netflix and Hulu, but we try to avoid ridiculous things. We've also begun approaching educating our children about what happens when they encounter this stuff. So I guess my reply is, begin to withdraw and find other outlets. We spend a lot of time out of our house and not around tv so that makes it easier. When at home we try to emphasize intelligent forms of media and growth.

Our culture is rapidly disintegrating into a nihilistic cesspool of vanity and self-indulgence. The rabble is taking over and I'm not thrilled about it. So the best bet is to be as God glorifying as possible, and be honest with people if the subject comes up. Yet we must remember these are sinners, lost people who need Jesus. Yelling at them isn't a good solution.

Of course this is what a post-Christian culture looks like, all the more reason to begin making missional efforts to reach the lost and make authentic disciples through real relationships.

Should they? Sure.

Will they? No. This is a secular event. The secular world doesn't see things that way. They don't view this as being as bad as it is.

I realize not everyone has the ability, but DVR's are wonderful wonderful things. Skipping commercials, halftime shows, etc. Or, get up and leave the room when these things come on.

Let's assume that we know the halftime show is going to be clean, but we know who the performers are? If it's not someone we like, why watch it? I'm not going to watch Madonna even if I know it's going to be a clean show.


One of my favorite things to do: I will watch Cincinnati Reds Baseball, mute the TV, and listen on the radio. Radio restrictions seem much clearer, and when a commercial comes on I take that time to get up and do something and then come back.

I don't think patience has anything to do with it. Our country has made it's bed, and we are seeing the results of that already.
