I leave my truck running when I go to a store. Never had an issue.

Of course, pitbull in the passenger seat may help. He is real friendly, until a stranger comes to the window. Goes from Scooby Doo to Cujo in half a second.

Since Dr. Puppy does not scare anyone - I always take the keys with me - even if its just for a moment - as that is all that it takes...
I have seen POV's stolen - because the customer ran in just to buy a pack of cancer sticks....

I guess she just put to much temptation in front of the thief!

Why not just hang her?

No ticket. Arrested for endangering the welfare of a child. She left a baby in a running car while she went down the street. ...
Actually, she was at the location to drop off the kids - her intention was to take the one in - then get the other one to take him in. It was NOT "down the street"
Sure it only took a moment - but that was all he needed to steal his car.

Many years ago, when I worked for Olan mills - my job was to collect the money from those who bought the "3 for $99" 8x10's. Well, I had to call in to see if there were any more pick ups. I parked just a foot or so from the pay phone (remember those) BUT the keys were in my pocket. A man came by to mug me - had my car been running - he would have stolen my car.

So what happened in the end - he hit me very hard on the head - I turned around - and he ran! I guess my family has hard heads!

From the news story:
“A mother stopped to drop off her baby twin boys at a Syracuse day care center Wednesday just like any other day. She unloaded one boy from her car and took him inside to hand off to a worker. She went back to get her other boy who was in her car parked just down the street.”

I may stand corrected - I was basically going by what I heard on TV news.

When I get a chance, I will try to drive by that location - wouldnt be until next week

Google lists a daycare at 622 Wolf Street, Syracuse NY but the news reported her car was on the North side of the 600 block (so across the street from the daycare).

You can drive by on Google Maps. (A feature I use all the time for “visiting sites” to look for a Fire Hydrant or what type of curb the road has.)

I don't think she should.

I routinely leave the keys in my car, most everybody does. I hardly ever lock them. I also leave my kid(s) in the car if I run into a store here. My neighbor leaves his keys in the ignition of his cars/trucks in the driveway all day and night. The only place I wouldn't leave the keys in the car would be if I went to our "big town" of Boone. I don't know most people in Boone...

By having property in a readily accessible location you are not committing a crime or traffic offense. It's the criminal that is committing it.

But she called the police - and the police had to use resources (YOUR Taxes) -
There is a reason a law prohibits you from leaving keys in the ignitio
Granted - in this case - the car was recovered quickly -

From Jan 16- Dec 18 - a car - with keys in the ignition - was stolen every 8 minutes!ig
That is an average of 209 vehicles per day. A lot of police resources were expended.

FWIW - In Germany - you can be given a ticket for leaving you vehicle unlocked - even if the keys are not in the ignition.

The story says “she went back to get her other boy that she left in her parked car just down the street.” So yes, it was “just down the street.

Edit: I see someone already pointed it out the line in the story.

peace to you
