Should we only listen to Gospel music?

Evidently, Sixpence is coming back to Christian music.

Just wondering, is that what you heard in an interview or somethine? Just curious, I've never heard any Christian band I listen to say something like that.

Anyway, about the original topic. I pretty much agree with MeliChaCha. Just be careful, know who you listen to. Personally, I only listen to a couple particular songs from secular artist. I listen to allot of stuff by artist who you'll hear debates about, such as Lifehouse, U2, Creed. None of them proclaim to be Christian bands, but at least the first two have Christian members, and they all have good lyrics. The vast majority of what I listen to is Christian rock. Some of it has lyrics that are so much deeper then any other music I have ever heard. Then there are some songs by CCMers that I won't listen to, Michael W. Smith's Colorblind comes to mind. BTW, I don't listen to the genre of Gospel, not something I enjoy.

Saved by Grace, you asked the right question. I would have no problem with Jesus sitting next to me while I play Matchbox 20's Bent, nor any of the other songs on my playlist.

On POD, I have mixed feelings. I love their music, they, Skillet, and the Supertones are on a lazy susan of my three favorite bands, and it depends on my mood who's #1 on any given day. For their witness, I admire them for going to ventures like OzzFest, because frankly they are the only Christian band with both the talent and the style to make it into a place like that. If they don't go, then no one else can. I have a hard time imagining that Jesus would really just leave the Ozzfest alone because it's a hive of scum and villainy.

But how do you do that if not for the Gospel?

Some people claim to have been ministered to by "The Eagles", "Jimmy Buffett" and/or other secular artist. I had a close friend feel this way about several country artists .Interesting. I will have to think about this some more. it kind of reminds me of something my dad once [IMG] told me years ago. He said, "You can find a buscuit in a trash can, but a trash can is not the place to look for buscuits!"

That was me what said that.

Your dad was right but you've got to remember that even when we don't go looking for God, He often comes looking for us.

Sidebar-for those who think "gospel" is the only way. What about the music we use in early childhood education? There's nothing gospel about; Row, Row, Row Your Boat / The Eency Weency Spider / Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star. Okay, okay, I'm being a little childish. [IMG]

I don't think it's childish at all. If they're going to say that no music is neutral or amoral, then they have to account for these, as well.

I've brought up a similar point in the past and no one has answered it.

Those nursery songs appeal to the lower fleshly appetites. Any parent who considers him/herself a Christian knows that our children must be taught at an early age just how destructive and sinful fun is!

I wouldn't make it a 'law' to listen to only Christian music. I do, occasionally listen to Eric Clapton and Bob Dylan, among others. I certainly also love classical music, especially 'Ludwig Van' and E. Grieg. But MOST of the time, I find myself listening to Christian music, traditional or contemporary (I just bought the new Michael Card CD, and really like it). And I do that, not because of a 'law', but rather, this is what connects most-deeply to my own spirit. BTW, I agree with Dr Bob-lyrics are important! That's one of the things that I appreciate about Michael Card-his lyrics are among the best in CCM today.

I enjoy CCM and other Messianic and Christian
music as well as classical and some opera. I
also, on occasion, enjoy jazz, big band, skat,
blues and other music. I cannot see how believers
must be restricted to certain music just because
someone else says it is evil.

The fact is that the time came when I turned my
back on our God because of the disappointments
I had in the churches, and I blamed Him. What
brought me back to him? That good ol' rockin'
song, "Ya' Gotta Serve Somebody." The truth in
that song hit me like the proverbial ton of bricks:
    "You may be a socialite
With a long strang o' pearls
But you're gonna have to serve someboday . . .
It may be te devil, or it may be the Lord
But you're gonna have to serve someboday."

I think most of know when our consciences prick
us. We do not need people to try to play Holy
Spirit in our lives, if we have not seared our
consciences. He will tell us what music we may
    listen to.

That song is sensual. It appeals to the lower appetites, therefore your reconversion was based on sensual worship and is void.
