You've equated a potluck to whiskey. I guess that I'd have to preface my statements by saying that I am a teetotaler. So, comparing whiskey to potluck, in my eyes, certainly would be like saying that having a potluck is a sin.
First of all, whiskey is not a sin. It is a beverage. Drinking it and becoming drunk is a sin. A potluck is not a sin. A four hundred pound person sitting down to a pot luck and stuffing your mouth so fast you cannot talk, but attempt to tell about someone who got drunk is gossip and gluttony in one act is a sin. I guess that is sin multitasking.
As I said in an above post, I don't drink because I learned long before I was saved I drank in a manner that ruins lives, not Baptist doctrine. It sounds like you have been in churches that addressed these sins, but the ones I have served in and visited did not. It always revolves drinking, dancing, and lottery tickets.
