Skirts/ Dresses

I am not debating on whether women should always be in dresses and skirts, I just want to know how many woman who are Baptist, wear dresses and skirts all the time. Personally, I have been convicted to dress in modest skirts and dresses all the time. Unfortunately, my budget isn't leaving much for a new wardrobe. Yes I have tried a few thrift shops, and I managed to get a lot of short sleeve tops to wear with skirts , very cheap. But finding skirts is another story. I want modest, not pilgrim style clothes. Who else wears dresses and skirts all the time, and what do you gentlemen think about women wearing skirts and dresses? To be honest, they ARE much more comfortable than pants could ever be. Even in the summer, they are much cooler than shorts . :type:

Smin--can you sew? There are LOTS of easy free skirt patterns out there. I've made skirts from blue jeans even. If you're handy with a sewing machine, you can make some simple skirts with elastic waists in an hour or two.

I prefer slacks myself, but I have no problem sewing skirts for my girls or others who like to wear them. They make a quick project.

That is unless you are talking about the kind of skirts some of these little vixens are wearing that look like they were applied with a paint brush. I wear dresses by choice anywhere I go. It is usually in the summer because it is way too hot to wear pants, and due to the circumstance (work) shorts are not generally appropriate.

Now, on the church realm, I haven't had the obligation to wear dresses to church since I was a mere person living at home with my mother.

Since moving out of my mom's house, I have chosen to wear whatever I wore, including dresses, pants, and shorts to church.

Like you, I am on a thrift store budget now for clothes, and have done okay on finding deals, but due to what is available, it is what it is.

We got out of Cali last week, a quick trip to Yuma, but it wasn't far enough....they were just as bad in Yuma as they were in Cali! :laugh:

Talk with the older ladies in your church. There are several in our church who sew. Perhaps one of them, in your church, can make some skirts for you. Or even better teach you how to sew. Flea markets and yard sales often have sewing machines for sale. Someone in your extended family may have one they'd give to you or sell for just a few dollars.

Even I can do some simple sewing. Learned how from my Mom on an old fashioned treadle machine. Once you learn the basics, and skirts can be pretty basic, then, it's up to you if you want to advance to more complicated stuff.

There's another plus. Once you learn how to make your skirts, you can save more money. At yard sales and flea markets you can look for anything with enough suitable fabric to be turned into a skirt. Want a quilted skirt for winter? Buy a lightweight quilt for a couple of bucks and cut it down. Spot a dress that's too large for you. Take off the top and add a waistband to the skirt. Sometimes drapes and curtains contain some nice fabrics suitable for other purposes. (Mom taught me how to be frugal, too. Saw her adapt and re-purpose many things, when I was growing up.)

Do talk to the ladies in your church along with friends and neighbors. The old skills are dying out, but they haven't gone, yet. Once you learn, you may have the opportunity to "pay it forward" to help someone else.

EXCELLENT suggestion. Ask at church, ask at your local crafts store, or ask a homeschool group if they can help you learn to sew.

In addition to what Oldtimer said about re-purposing, another idea is to find cheap clothing at yard sales or thrift shops and alter it or fix it to suit you. This could mean replacing missing buttons or a broken zipper. So many people will toss clothing simply because they don't know how to repair a small hole or install a zipper or re-stitch a torn seam.

Another thought is to trade services with someone who can sew. Maybe you could bake or babysit in return for some alterations. You could try freecycle to see if anyone in your area is giving away used clothing. Local churches sometimes have clothing closet days where they accept and give or sell used clothes.

As a man who grew up in the 50's and 60's, I think a woman who wears dresses/skirts (modestly) is a lady in my book. I think a dress makes you look feminiem.:thumbsup:

Granted, I would not advise you to wear your skirt while sliding into second base :smilewinkgrin: . (that means wear shorts - not that you shouldndt play softball)

I like jumpers. I have one in particular that is denim with UT on the front. LOL! But it is so comfortable and I wear a t shirt under it. It's just straight with no gathered waist or anything like that. They can be made easily.

Yes....& I like lounging in my Sinclair Tartan Highland Plaid--mid-weight wool. Also seed & feed my lawn in it...."hoots man." Gentlemen wear kilts 'cos the birds luv it'. This is a quaint old Scottish courting expression. :laugh:

Well I do wear modest, nothing is ever shorter than mid to lower calf. I like my summer skirts long and flowey. I try not to wear tight fitting tops , not low cut or v cut, etc. it isn't really that difficult to dress modest . I had a few real nice skirts that I tossed out when I was attending the " contemporary Baptist church" because I felt out of place. They were PERFECT. Straight but not tight jean skirt, little past mid calf, and a black skirt, almost to ankle but it was real nice. I cant believe I tossed them out. See how radical Christian music can effect people? Casual music, = casual dress. At least that is what happened with me. Every woman at my church wears dresses and skirts. I love it. From the baby girls all the way up to the Srs. I enjoy wearing them all the time. I just have to get a few dresses for the house/ running errands, etc. A few more for church and a few skirts and tops for church. I may not find it all at a thrift store and may have to pay " gasp" full price somewhere and buy them new. The Lord will provide me with what I need. I am not worried I just wish I had this conviction when I got saved 17 years ago instead of now at 49. But it is what it is

I would take exception to what you've written in the bold because I've been in churches with very modern music and very modestly dressed women - and I've been in hymn only churches with very immodestly dressed women. It's not the music but the general culture of the church.

I've purposely stayed out of this thread because until now, you were just looking for advice on where to find clothes.

But now, you have made a statement that isn't true.

All Christian music should be radical. Whether you are singing "The Old Rugged Cross" with a pipe organ or a newer song with guitars and keyboards. Christian music should radically transform our hearts and minds to focus solely on the God we serve and worship.

Casual music cannot be classified as contemporary. Casual attire cannot be classified as a one-holed garment or a two-holed garment.

I'm curious. And I don't want to debate your conviction because you said in the OP that's not what you wanted, so let's don't.

But I am curious because you've mentioned it more than once.

Just what is it about pants that you were convicted of to never wear them again?
