Small group ministry

Good day,

Was wanting to get some feedback from some of you who are or have been involved in a small group/home study ministry?

Would like some thoughts/suggestions to how you went about your studies? Was it book by book studies? Themed studies? Others?

Did your group adopt any missions work locally in your community? Any volunteer weekends or monthy fellowship events?

Our small group started out late last year, so far so good, but I'm always looking for some suggestions and helps.

We have 5-6 small group Bible studies outside of SS going at various times throughout the year.

We try to get our small groups to be involved in some mission project which helps slow the almost inevitable slide towards in breeding in a group. I like the mission projects rather than a fellowship event. My take on the NT idea of fellowship is mutual ministry rather than shared food.

We have a list of Bible studies, some are book studies and others are themes, that they can choose from to study. That way we can know what is being taught.

Thanks Tom; we use the monthly fellowship events to invite visitors, prospects, ask our group members to invite friends, etc. We go bowling, or putt putt, or some other group thing to join in fellowship with some (hopefully) newcomers.

We are praying currently for a few mission projects in our community, and starting to gather some more information and get some ideas on when/how/where we're going to embark on the volunteer/mission work.

We go over the Sunday AM sermon in homes on sunday PM. There is so much more to be gained than just hearing the sermon and forgetting it later.

We have been too busy for missions projects but have wanted to do them many times.

We have a targeted set of resources and teaching topics that we ask our groups to go through in a given year. We provide the info to each group leader through our website, they keep us in the loop, and we make sure they are on target to connect as best as possible with the needs of our community. We primarily focus on topical studies that are deeply rooted in Scripture but also have some Bible book studies.

Did your group adopt any missions work locally in your community? Any volunteer weekends or monthy fellowship events?

We ask each of our groups to plan on doing two service events a year. We provide them with a list and dates they can be done. If they haven't done one by May we call and check up, if they haven't done the second by October the same. Good accountability system.

We have all our leadership sign leadership covenants. It has helped a ton. Have fun getting your groups going. A strong groups ministry is the best assimilation tool a church can have.
