    Well, you guys are getting me excited about this trip, and I still have 2 yrs to wait!
    What kind of activities are in the actual smokies? We like maybe trails that aren't that long, relaxing in a calm picnic area over lunch, and just sitting and looking at trees and animals.
    We spend a lot of time at Mammoth Cave National park, only a few miles from home. Go at dusk and see deers everywhere.

    There are many species native to the Smokies that only exist there, as well as many others that are only found well to the north of there. I had to do a research paper on the ecosystems of the Smokies, and it is rather fascinating. Here's the National Parks Service's Great Smoky Mountain website, which I used for a lot of my research:

    We've decided if we go, we do not want to stay in pigeon forge, as our main goal in going is to expereince the smokies.

    Staying in a cabin in Pigeon Forge is a big part of the vacation. There is plenty of room for two families to stay.
    Myself, I just love to eat out and take a helicopter ride and eat out and oh, did I mention eat out. :laugh:

    For us, when we stay in a cabin, we don't want it to look like a house, we want rugged, the bare necessities. I couldn't those online anywhere. We spent our 25th anniversary at Mammoth Cave Nat' pk, in a rugged cabin, no heat or air, no tv or phone, bare studs inside and just the planks covering the outside, we did have screen on the windows those, that was a plus, and a working indoor bath room. Thats all we want. Cabins I saw online had regualr kitchens, heat and air, tv with cable, jacuzzi's and stuff like that.
    Pigeon Forge we are thinking is too commercial, when what we really want is the out doors being part of God's creation, mountains, trees, animals. Not Dollywood.
    But I'm sure it makes some people happy. We live in a tourist area, we'd like to get away from the usual.

    Donna, are you into hiking at all? If you are you should really check out the Mount LeCont Lodge. I think I am spelling that right.

    It is part of the park and is a rustic lodge on top of, you guessed it, Mount LeCont. There are several different trails that can take you there. The shortest is about 3 miles but is very steep. The easiest is about 7 miles. Once you get in there is a full staff at the lodge and they will provide you with a bed and meals. There is running water but it is not hot and they serve hot meals but there is no electricity. They bring supplies in once a week by Llama. They used to use mules but Llamas are supposed to be less destructive to the trails.

    That sounds awesome, but I don't think either of us is up to something like that. But I wish we were we'd love that.
