I cant say if its sinful to anyone else, but it sure is icky. I quit on May 19th, four months now and i am SO glad i quit! I think for me, it was very bad not only because of my own health but my childrens health as well as being an example to them. I hope they make a better choice to never be dumb and start up like i did.

"Since you died with Christ to the basic principles of this world, why, as though you still belonged to it, do you submit to its rules: 'Do not handle! Do not taste! Do not touch! These are all destined to perish with use, because they are based on human commands and teachings. Such regulations indeed have an appearance of wisdom, with their self-imposed worship, their false humility, and their harsh treatment of the body, but they lack any value in restraining sensual indulgence."
    Colossians 2:20-23

All things that God has created have been given to us as gifts. The problem is not that people use the gifts, but that they abuse them and employ them in such ways that are destructive. The Scripture nowhere prohibits the use of tobacco. Where Scripture is silent, we should be silent.

"Wait!", some will wail, "What about marijuana and such?" God is the creator of marijuana. It serves some purpose - we as human beings have abused it rather than using it in a useful manner. Not only that, it is illegal, and we are to be subject to the authorities (Rom. 13). This could be applied to several "substances."

The problem is not the tobacco, the problem is the heart which lacks self-control and seeks pleasure apart from understanding and appreciating God's gifts to us.

I don't believe that any of these substances are sinful to use. And I seriously doubt that they are harmful as long as they aren't done in excess.

Was Spurgeon aware of the harmful side effects of smoking? Probably not. If he knew it would hinder preaching, do you really think he would have done it?

Like the thought of licking an ashtray, I am out.

    Brothers and Sisters,

Being a smoker I couldn't resist this one.

I do not think using these products are sinful.

They do not compare to narcotics or even alcohol as they do not produce the effects of those others. They are not clean. I do believe moderation is the key. I do think the harmful nature of these products results from the chemicals applied, in production of the growing product as well as processing. I do think if I am convicted on the need to rid myself of this habit it then becomes a sin as it effectively produces through me disobedience and grievance to the Holy Spirit. I remember reading somewhere that Jesus said (paraphrased) it is not that which enters into the mouth of a man which defiles, but that which comes from his mouth, as this is from the heart. I have heard that freon, bologna, hot dogs, red meat, and the list continues... are agents of cancer, (at least many of these products are known to the State of California to cause cancer).

As far as Spurgeon, I do not continue to smoke because he did, however, I find in moderation I do enjoy smoking.

I know I should quit, but have not yet. Pray if it is the Lord's will I would submit.

BTW I still enjoy Bologna sandwiches while sitting beneath my air conditioner, and just afterward enjoy a cigarette???. Never have been sure of the spelling of this word. (perhaps spelling tests would be a better qualification than birthdates, as far as deterring youth from beginning??)
