Charles Spurgeon not only drank beer and wine but also smoked to the glory of God.

"Smoked to the glory of God." Someone's theology is askew.

It's not good for you in excess but perhaps here and there would be okay.

It is well established that smoking is damaging to one's health. No, intentionally damaging a temple of Our Lord (a Christian's body) is not okay.

You need to back away from following personalities and get back to Scripture.

True. Sometimes I follow them more than scripture.

Hast thou faith? have it to thyself before God. Happy is he that condemneth not himself in that thing which he alloweth. And he that doubteth is damned if he eat, because he eateth not of faith: for whatsoever is not of faith is sin. -Ro. 14.22, 23

I am not opposed to tobacco or alcohol, but if you need someone else to approve of what you are doing or convince you that it is not a sin, you probably should not be doing it.

All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any. -1 Co. 6.12

There is only one addiction worth having.

I beseech you, brethren, (ye know the house of Stephanas, that it is the firstfruits of Achaia, and that they have addicted themselves to the ministry of the saints,) -1 Co. 16.15

Charles Spurgeon not only drank beer and wine but also smoked to the glory of God. I hate cigarettes but how is a Cegar? Anyone here smoke? It's not good for you in excess but perhaps here and there would be okay.
What exactly does it mean to smoke or drink "to the glory of God" (how is God glorified in our smoking and drinking)?

I will only smoke a cigar on certain occasions. I have a humidor box full of Cubans. And only with just me and the wife.... never around the kids and such.

Sweet spices / perfumes were an art form, used for medicinal purposes.

God identified particular spices, perfumes, in a specific measure that were to be burned For a specific purpose, holy unto Him.

Today, smoke inhalation, and it's smells and perfumes are used for an individuals purposes.

Today, "cigarettes", are a mixture of toxic compounds, of toxic plant pesticides, to toxic addictive additives, to instigate an ongoing support of the cigarette companies bank roll.

Ex 30
[34] And the LORD said unto Moses, Take unto thee sweet spices, stacte, and onycha, and galbanum; these sweet spices with pure frankincense: of each shall there be a like weight:
[35] And thou shalt make it a perfume, a confection after the art of the apothecary, tempered together, pure and holy:
[36] And thou shalt beat some of it very small, and put of it before the testimony in the tabernacle of the congregation, where I will meet with thee: it shall be unto you most holy.
[37] And as for the perfume which thou shalt make, ye shall not make to yourselves according to the composition thereof: it shall be unto thee holy for the LORD.

And ~ the only thing in scripture I am aware of for a man to do without a limited measure is prayer.

1Thes.5
  1. [17] Pray without ceasing.

I have read that Moody smoked cigars but noted that some company used his picture with the notation "Moody smoked their brand" so he gave them up as he felt it was not a good witness.
Certainly tobacco and alcohol is not a healthy life style but neither is gluttony or many other vices I have noted among us "Baptists" in my 40 some years in the ministry.
I do not advocate smoking or consumption of alcohol but like any sin if one feels guilty then he or she probably should not be doing it and get themselves right with God.

Sounds like, touch not, taste not, handle not from religion's broom closet.

How about Ephesians 5:29?
"For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it..."

I smoke all I want it's just that I do not want to smoke. I used to smoke a long time ago and tried to quit many times. Then one day smoking knocked on my door and I didn't answer. From time to time I will get a subtle urge and recognise it as a feeling that would make me want to smoke. So, I'd light one up, go buy a pack or bum a smoke from a friend.
Now I just do nothing other than thank God for the deliverance from a back habit and a more clever addiction.

You do not believe that wine comes from God?
I believe a lot of things come from God. Poison ivy comes from God, but that does not mean I will smoke it, or drink its extract.

My question is not from whence wine comes. I know wine comes from grapes, and grapes from God. My question concerns your initial statement about smoking and drinking to the glory of God.

How is God glorified by men smoking and drinking?

Okay, I couldn't let this one slide.

Did God create wine?

Does it occur naturally somewhere? Or do the grapes have to be collected, placed in a container, and allowed to ferment?

Does this mean God created vodka? Or do the grains, cereals, whatever have to be mixed and allowed to be fermented?

How about beer? Or do those ingredients have to be mixed and allowed to ferment?

And let's not forget Mike's hard lemonades. Are those naturally occuring, or do they require someone to mix them?

There are SO many things wrong with this thread, starting with "smoked to the glory of God."

The author of this thread has been looking for justification of his lifestyle choices. I suggest he allow soul liberty to work in his life, and stop looking for validation from anonymous internet entities.

A similar story is written how Spurgeon saw a brand advertised in a local shop window as "Spurgeon's Tobacco" and promptly and finally gave up the activity with "Do I want to be remembered for the Lord I served or the Tobacco I smoked?"
Such stories told, whether about him, Moody, or Pentecost, could all be true. The merchant prepared to use a well-known preacher's name to advertise his goods is hardly likely to be unique, neither is the preacher who would react in the same way these men reacted.
By the way, the Lord Jesus smoked tilapia to the glory of God. Indeed, He hot-smoked it.

But "soul liberty" is still dependent on glorifying God through these actions. Yes, the children are free, but for what are we using this freedom? Is it to indulge the flesh or to glorify God?

Most often "soul liberty" finds its true expression in laying aside a freedom for the love of another. But when we cling to this freedom as a right it becomes not liberty in Christ but enslavement to the flesh. I suspect the latter is the cause of this thread.

Wrong. I am looking to prove a point or just to discuss as I myself do not even smoke!
