Hi JonC, well we have found yet another Greek word (or family of words) that we fundamentally disagree as to their meaning. First, they always are used in light of God's condemnation, thus to claim a meaning of medication or usefulness is to ignore the obvious. So drug use for sinful purpose is indeed the meaning. Thus being addicted to drug use to satisfy the desires of the flesh is condemned in Galatians 5:20.

Yes Van, we can add another to our list of words on which we disagree. Often these words take on meanings of their own based on association (i.e., pagans using drugs for sorcery). But you may be right and the verse could be merely pointing to abusing a drug to indulge the flesh. It would be, then, the same as drunkenness.

While it is not the end of the world if someone smokes, nor if all the deacons run out after the church service and blow on their little white thing, I have several concerns about smoking:

1. Health related issues to those smoking and those around those who smoke.

2. What people smell like when they smoke

3. the addiction power of tobacco. There has to be a better way to cope.
