    Ken,

Do you consider yourself to be a "moderate conservative?" You didn't say that in this post, but I was curious.

    Regards,
BiR (actually in Richmond....for another two days)

Yeah and define that word "pro-active" Ken.

How much "emphasis" is needed to remain a steadfast pro-activist BTW? [IMG]

I don't know. I am pro-life and anti-homosexual marriage but I don't want to see the federal government involved in either issue by amending the federal constitution. I am for a balanced budget even if it means raising taxes to close the half a trillion dollar budget deficit since I think it would interesting to see the reaction of the American people if we had to pay for all of the spending taking place by Washington, D.C. I want as much governmental power concentrated as close to the people on the lower levels of government as possible where we can exercise better oversight of government officials.

Whether these make me a moderate conservative or not I don't know.

It means, to me, not being isolationist and re-active.

</font>[/QUOTE]I'd say you have good moral character, love your country and would like to see America on the path to better government by way of the constitution. I agree, but we both know that isn't going to happen like we had hoped.

I think an isolationist is one of those urban legends critters ya hear about all the time. I think they might be extinct no one has actually seen one in hundred years.

Pro-active is good, it's pre-emption being all the rage now that seems to be a tad on the extreme side. Do moderates belive that we ought to get them before they gets us?

Good guys in the cowboy movies I saw as a kid always wore white hats and let the other fella draw first. Now they wear $2000 suits have 'power lunches' and give away state secrets to foreign governments, and have black masked wolf pack footsoldiers to 'enforce' the color of law.

But Joseph, don't you know? Many people don't like the 14th, believing it to be a usurpation (is that a word?) of state's rights. [IMG]

    Ken,

What I would consider extreme conservatives would want the federal government to ban abortion outright and usurp the States' historic jurisdiction over marriage.

I agree abortion should go to the states but agree with some type of federal marriage amendment. I guess that makes me a moderate extreme conservative. [IMG]

I think it would be awesome to have a black conservative female as President or Veep but I don't know how truly conservative she is, especially on domestic issues, including the social issues, except that I understand she is "pro-choice".

I am very comfortable with Secretary of State Rice's position as I have no problem with keeping the federal government out of the issue and leaving it to the States.

So, she is in favor of overturning Roe v. Wade? That would be the sole effect of overturning that decision.

    JB,

I wonder if moderate conservatives would have agreed with you back in the days of Jim Crow about allowing the states to decide. I think that when the states violate the civil rights of other human beings, that they no longer have the right to decide that for themselves, and yes that includes cases such as abortions.

I think they would have disagreed with Ken, but they were wrong then. The 14th and 15th Amendments, IMO, provided plenty of support for federal government intervention. Hadley Arkes, a natural law conservative, wrote an excellent book, Beyond the Constitution, though, that really challenged my deeply held belief in the 10th Amendment and states rights. Didn't change them, but sure as heck challenged them.

No, they don't exist anymore. They all became republicans and most can be found in the local church.

    Sad but true. :(

And black racists tend to be Democrats. So both major parties have bad apples in them. A good reason to be an independent and not to support any one political party.

Back to Condi. I think the writer of this article was wrong. I don't believe that the entire South is waiting/wanting her to run for President. There will always be someone who will ask the question of polical office to those in Condi's profession, especially if they are a minority, simply because there are so few minority candidates that appeal to the majority of voters. That doesn't mean that if the questioner is Southern that the entire south is willing to vote that direction.

I for one, don't really like her. I don't think she has been an excellent Secretary of State. Not that she's been terrible, just not good. I don't believe she has the strength of say, Colin Powell, that she would need to push her ideas through Congress. For the most part it appears to me that she is simply floating along on the ideas of others, instead of her own. I want someone stronger and more outspoken for President.

Something else this writer got wrong: Jim and Nick's is NOT a "southern fried restaurant", it is a very popular, somewhat expensive restaurant that offers BBQ as it's main course.

At least Condi has good taste.

Me, neither. All some charming gentleman has to do is say the right words, and state secrets will fall like ripe apples from the tree. Women are too emotional and too gullible to be given the most powerful position in the world.

Of course, a woman might show better restraint over a runaway fiscal budget. ;)

Women weren't made to rule over men. I don't care if it's Hillary vs. Condi, I wouldn't vote for either of them, and half of the conservative base of the Republicans just wouldn't vote at all. The stupidest move would be to nominate Condi to run against Hillary. If a competent man runs against Hillary, he'll win hands down, because many men, whether Republican or Democrat, won't vote for a woman president, period.

Actually, it would be the GOP's smartest move - which is why it probably won't do it.

As for as those who hold to the notion of not voting for a woman for president, they can just sit out such an election. We are probably better off when people with that kind of attitude don't vote anyway.

I would still vote for someone probably of the Constitution Party. Sitting out is not an option for me, but for many it is. But in a two-party system, having two women running is going to demoralize traditionalists like me. I ain't votin for no woman to be commander in chief of the most powerful nation in the world. And since this is a Christian website, God did not design the woman to rule over the man; he designed her to be subject to him.
