Also as a Dec. graduate of Southeastern, it is a great school.

I had one prof. who said if he is in a calvinistic crowd he leans toward arminian, if he is ina arminian crowd he leans calvinistic. I believe he said he did so to challenge their views. I know there are some calvinistic students here but I haven't had any prof.s say they are.

Mid-America is actually in Memphis, TN. Midwestern is the SBC seminary in KCMO. Also, Mid-America is not supported directly by the SBC even though it obviously caters to the "new generation" of Southern Baptists.

IIRC, didn't Patterson at one time state that he would rather have a Calvinist speaking in his chapel--as opposed to any pro-CBF seminary professor?

I am an alumnus of New Orleans seminary, and hubby is still a PhD student there. My allegiance is there as far as seminaries go, but I fully support all six of the SBC ones!!

    Southeastern produces preachers.
    Southern produces scholars.
    Southwestern produces scholarly preachers.

All three are great schools. [IMG]

They are a "moderate" Southern Baptist Seminary instead of a mainstream baptist seminary. In my opinion their behavior over the Review and Expositor was particularly embarrassing (and cowardly).

    ExxonMobile,
I like all the schools you listed, plus Beeson at Samford. I'm not familiar with the controversy at Truett, although from what I've heard Samford and Baylor are more conservative than the other schools you listed, which more represent mainline Christian scholarship.

Yes. It's interesting how Truett gets beaten on by the so-called "conservatives" in Texas for being too "liberal" and by some "liberals" for being too "conservative".

What's wrong with a school being "moderate"? (I sincerely ask this because I consider myself a "moderate".)

I recall the controversy but I couldn't put my hands on that issue to see what was said in the article. I heard Truett did something, but I don't recall what it was. Can you enlighten me? :D

Mid-American, Midwestern whatever the name they should close that campus and move it to Denver, where it should have been in the first place!

Review and Expositor is published by a consortium of baptist seminaries. When a recent issue dealt with issues of sexuality (in a scholarly fashion) Truett responded to an uproar among Southern Baptists and withdrew its support for the journal.

Truett strikes me as the quintessential Texas Baptist seminary.

One of the few positive steps Truett has made in recent years.

It almost made me chuckle when you referred to that loathsome smut of an issue as a scholarly examination of sexuality. Then I considered the source and instead of laughing, I simply sighed

    Well said.

I, too, saw the issue. Apparently R&E lost the concept of a theological journal interacting with theology.

Is there a copy of that issue online where I can see it myself or do I have to go on the word of others?

 You better be sayin’ that with a smile pardner! You’re talkin’ to a “Texas Baptist”.

When you say it is the “quintessential Texas Baptist seminary”, are you saying that’s a bad thing? Do you have a beef with Texas Baptists (BGCT)?

My "beef" is the dramatic shift to the right I experienced in the CBF when the Texas Baptists started flexing their muscles.

In my experience, a Texas "moderate" is what the rest of us would call a right-wing conservative. They also seem to have much more favorable associations with the good ol' days of the Southern Baptist Convention than the rest of the CBF.

Joshua's observation about Texas is pretty telling about the SBC. Texas moderates were too "liberal" for the SBC, so they've set about forming what is essentially their own denomination. Yet, when compared to mainline Christendom, they are very conservative. I think we forget how far right the Baptist scale is tilted.

David, I have heard that Beeson has a somewhat Calvinistic, Reformed influence. Wouldn't that be an issue to you?
