Before you get too cracked up, remember there is a clear distinction between disagreeing over certain interpretations of Scripture than disagreeing over the authority of Scripture itself. Herein lies the problem and the need for the resurgence itself.

I have preached evangelistic messages across the United States and overseas. I have formed an evangelistic association. The Master of Divinity I earned was with a concentration in evangelism and missions. In my work as a pastor I began an outreach program and led our church to become a Global Priority Church of the SBC IMB. Our church also became a "Covenant" church with NAMB. How is that for "practice"?

Those who claim the SBC thing is over "authority" (really a straw man because authority has it's roots in interpretation) of scripture have been deceived. It is about control and power! Anything else is a smokescreen to conceal certian individuals ego's.

Wow, go2church, you could have fooled me. Listening to some of the theology of some of those who taught here at one time and who oppose the school now it sure seems to be an authority issue that leads to major interpretation problems. As for the control and power issue, it sure seems that the ones who are not in power now whine about it and greatly desire to have control and power once again! So I would agree that it is a control and power issue to some extent, those who want it don't currently have it.

    Neal,
I suppose the arguement about which comes first authority or interpretation could go on for many, many moons. I probably shouldn't be so dogmatic about my "stand". Concerning the control issue, I couldn't agree more with you last statement, those who aren't in control are upest that they aren't in control anymore.

You have a difficult task in persuading us that the authority issue is a straw man. You can begin by explaining the spiral of Clark Pinnock, then we can decide whether the authority issue is a straw man.

I have never presumed that I would be able to persuade anyone on this board of anything!

My point is simply this...what is said the "battle" is about, is not actually what the "battle" is about! One side has made into an issue over soul freedom and local autonomy, while the other side is saying is about protecting and defending the bible. The truth is that both sides don't like being told what to do so they want to control everything instead. Call it what you want, define and redefine, but that is it in a nutshell.

Concerning authority verses interprtation...that is an arguement that should probably be discussed on another thread. That is if you want!

Indeed both sides of the controversy feel they are in the right. However I question the argument that those involved in the resurgence were simply acting based upon some type of egotistical power trip. Whether one agrees or disagrees with their views on authority and/or inerrancy, it does seem that their primary motive was to stop the evident spiral that was occurring.

It is easy to judge motives on either side of the fence. You can deny the potential danger they felt was present, but for them, the danger was not only present but also threatening the very life of the SBC, so they acted. I tend to agree with their perspective.

Much of the controversy has been politicized, but in the end, I personally believe it was the biblical authority issue that drove the resurgenists.

    SBC,
I would hardly be the one to judge the motives of either, but I hope I haven't left the impression (but obviously I have) that only the conservatives have egos. As much as I dislike the "we are more conservative then you so we are better" attitude, I equally dislike the thought "being conservative is so beneath us so we are better" attitude.
