There are a number of factors here. The biggest, of course, is the fact that the language was a mirror of the problem. As many have pointed out, “all lives matter” was often not about broadening the conversation but changing the subject. Underneath that, though, some other people—not in the “all lives matter” polemics category—were confused about whether “black lives matter,” as a phrase, meant that they agreed, in totality, with whatever was or might be advocated by the organization by that name. Now, though, it is clear that “black lives matter” is much bigger than one organization, and that the phrase points to a much larger moral claim. After the murders of Ahmaud Arbery, George Floyd, Breona Taylor, and others, that moral claim is a long time coming in being heard.
