FORT WORTH, Texas (ABP) -- Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary has adopted a policy statement that declares men and women equal before God but created for specific roles of headship and submission in the church and home.

Seminary trustees voted Oct. 21 to add the Danvers Statement on Biblical Manhood and Womanhood to the seminary’s policy manual under "Guiding Documents and Statements."

The statement, composed in 1987 in Danvers, Mass., by the then-new Council on Biblical Manhood and Womanhood, responds to "widespread uncertainty and confusion in our culture regarding the complementary differences between masculinity and femininity" and "increasing promotion given to feminist egalitarianism" in church and culture.

It affirms, among other things, that "Adam and Eve were created in God's image, equal before God as persons and distinct in their manhood and womanhood," that "distinctions in masculine and feminine roles are ordained by God as part of the created order" and that "Adam's headship in marriage was established by God before the Fall, and was not a result of sin."

"Complementarianism," a conservative theological view that men and women have different roles and responsibilities in marriage and religious leadership, has been gaining ground in the Southern Baptist Convention for 20 years.

Does anyone know where to find a copy of the SWBTS Policy Manual online?

I'm interested in seeing what else they have added to the "Guiding Documents and Statements."

I thought they had already done that or something similar? Wonder how long before they adopt the women should be barefoot and pregnant statement or bar women all together from the campus? Well everyone except Dot, we know those silly rules don't apply to her.

Since none of those ideas are Biblical, I think you'd be waiting a long time to see those ideas adopted.

Well neither are the ideas behind the Council for Keeping Women in Their Place, but that didn't stop them from adopting them.

You know, you are right, lets throw the Bible out when selecting a pastor. Let's see, how about a homosexual, child predator, 10x divorced, 3x bankruptcy, part owner of a p0rn store,.....
But he meets the main standard, he wears a white shirt and black tie for Sun AM,PM Wed PM as well as Thrus visitation!

I'm not against standards and expectations, I just think they should be biblical in origin rather then human. The whole equal but equal as equal as a man to is not biblical.

I have no clue what you're referring to here.

what he is referring to is the libbies are upset at Dr. Paige Patterson as usual. It began with the Battle over the Bible and now has move on to his distinction between the roles of men and women. Most recently with Sherry Klouda who was a professor at SW and was not given tenure because she was teaching preachers. Dr. Patterson wanted to hold to Biblical principles that libbies want to ignore as you have seen on this board.

To all: this is not a debate forum. Let's watch the tone, please. I have no tolerance for mudslinging in fellowship forums.

Since there has been no response to my question, I'm guessing that no one else has been able to find the extra-biblical statements with which a prospective seminary professor must provide assent.

From what I gather, the Guiding Documents and Statements currently contain (at least):

  • The 2000 Baptist Faith and Message
  • The Chicago Statement on Inerrancy
  • The Danvers Statement
  • Perhaps the resolution regarding tongue-speaking (“As it concerns private practices of devotion, these practices, if genuinely private, remain unknown to the general public and are, therefore, beyond the purview of Southwestern Seminary. Southwestern will not knowingly endorse in any way, advertise, or commend the conclusions of the contemporary charismatic movement including ‘private prayer language.’ Neither will Southwestern knowingly employ professors or administrators who promote such practices.”)
  • The statement that a professor may not publicly disagree with a position of the seminary leadership.
Does anyone remember anything else that has been added in the last 15 years?

I'm glad SWBTS now has a statement publicly affirming their position. When I attended there we didn't need one. If I were a potential student this would certainly help me understand their decision and make a wise choice of seminaries. :)

I don't think it's appropriate for the seminary take positions more theologically narrow than the SBC, but I think it is a good thing that they are at least specifying the standards by which they will allegedly judge their professors.

Standards for today! Hold tight I assure you it is only a matter of time before something else is added. It goes to show how little regard Paige has for the entirety of the SBC. It's his world and we are just living in it. Or so he thinks.

More Paige bashing I see. The moderator just addressed that. You should be ashamed.
