Thank you, pinoybaptist, for sharing your pain. Sometimes I wish there was a "support" group I could go to, but I think in a way, this Board is exactly that. Thank you, Mr. Curtis, for your encouragement. I know folks get tired of me constantly referring to my son, Patrick, but right now, he is very much in need of help. I'm just searching for ways & trying to understand...

I'm sure it's very hard to see someone who used to be in a good church, well-grounded in the faith, get in with some people who seem to be leading them way off track :(

And I think it's wonderful how the the Internet can be used for fellowship and support. [IMG]

Even if cessationists are right, the gifts of the Spirit are back---it's the last days, Folks! [IMG] Hello? ;)

    Yeah but...

1)Do not put out the Spirit's fire
2)Do not treat prophecies with contempt
    3)Test everything.
    4)Hold on to the good.
    5)Avoid every kind of evil.

    (1 Thess 5:19-22)

If we're applying these, then we can't just take anyone's word for it that something is of the Spirit. We have to test it. If it really is we must not treat it with contempt. But if isn't we must avoid it as evil.

We need to be as discerning as possible.

Yeah, but....the majority on here aren't even open to the POSSIBILITY that something (tongues, healing, etc.) IS of the Holy Spirit. It is just assumed that tongues and authority given to the Apostles in binding/loosing have ceased! WHY? Man made doctrines? Fear of the Supernatural Holy Spirit?

To interpret Scripture correctly is to Test the Spirits and to be careful not to grieve the Holy Spirit by attributing what IS of the Holy Spirit to that of the spirit of the devil. But few on here seem to remember that part of Scripture. And....it IS the last days. Perhaps that explains one reason so many churches are cold and dead?? If churches are NOT open to receive ALL the gifts of the Holy Spirit in all areas, He will not go where not welcome, IMO. It's food for thought, anyway, even though not popular with a certain status quo.

...and cessationists cannot PROVE BEYOND ANY DOUBT that Scripture bears out their doctrine. I haven't seen it yet on this board & I've been lurking. Instead of proof, all that is offered is denigration of other believers who don't fit into a particular doctrinal box, i.e., calling them backslidden, etc. So again, where's the Proof? And where's the spirit of Love? :(

    Pinoybaptist,
    Greetings my friend! :D
    Are you still lurking? LOL!
I am so sorry to hear about your sister. That is truly devastating. There are churches that are abusive like that. There was a church we attended that the pastor felt you needed to be in church every night out of the week. It was a "works" mentality. We told him it was very difficult to do that as we have younger children, and we end up getting "burnt out." He told us if you get burnt out, perhaps you need to rely on the Holy Spirit more.
See, there are abusive churches out there. It has nothing to do with the gifts of the Spirit though. It has to do with the "shepard" contolling the flock. You end up feeling that if you left the church, you basically left God! It is an emotional roller-coaster. People see their church family as their family. They are very close, and do many things together. Therefore; if you leave the church, you are really leaving your family! It is not easy. It is very hurtful, and you end up being shunned by the people who shared your intimate secrets, and prayed with you. This is very hurtful indeed!
There is much information on the internet under "Spiritual Abuse." It can happen in christian churches, as well as cults.
I understand this, and I sympathize with you for your sister. :(
This does not have to do with speaking in tongues. You simply cannot throw out the baby with the bathwater. People who are not saved, are quick to tell me story after story about how they have seen family members hurt in the church. I tell them that it will happen, no doubt about it.
But, if you turn it around....I have seen people hurt in as well as out of the church!
We need to be rooted and grounded in the word of God, so that we can stand upon His promises and not waiver, No matter what! We need to interceed for the ones who are caught up in churches that are not scripturally sound.
Again I am sorry about your sister.

    Mr. Curtis,
Amen! We should never put any "bad" experience about the gifts of the Holy Spirit above what the scriptures say. When we begin to place God in a confined area (as the devil is not confined) then we are in trouble. If satan is free to roam about the earth right now....why isn't the Holy Spirit?
And IF The Holy Spirit is able to do anything on our behalf, why would you stop Him?
It is true, that we should never place our feelings above the word of God. Our experiences, however, should not be discounted. If I told you what I have seen and experienced, you would not believe me. Only because you have placed our God in restraints. I am telling you, Our God is an Awesome God, and He can still do miracles and things beyond what you can imagine. I think He does not do them in the four walls of the church, as He does them outside the four walls of the church. In the streets, where the hurting people are. In the widow's, in the orphans.
My doctrinal beliefs have been challenged by my experiences before. Then when I go back to scripture, I find that it was always there, I just mis-intrepreted it! It was always scriptural, I just needed the eyes and the ears to see and hear what God was doing!

    Mr. Curtis,
OOps! After reading what I wrote, it sounds as if I am saying you do not have ears to hear. Please forgive me :( I did not mean it like that.
I wish I would have caught that before.

I saw some idiot preacher on Day Star today telling me that if I don't believe in healing, or gifts of the spirit, it's because I've never experienced it.

    Baloney.

I was diagnosed with non-Hodgekin's Lymphoma in '86. After several months of chemo-therapy & radiation, I was given a clean bill of health. I was healed. I wanted to call up & tell this moron about it, but instead I turned the channel. I only put those "christian TV" shows on long enough to get disgusted.

I know of several Christians who have not been healed. It has nothing to do with faith at all. It has to do with God's will. If it is God's will that someone suffer with disease, and even die from it, then it is his will. We cannot change that. Anyone who tell you that God wants you healed, & your faith must not be strong enough, is nothing more than a bully.

The bible gives no indication that the apostle Paul ever got his eyesight back.

    That is so true!

I know of a christian woman who had a brain tumor, we prayed (in faith) believing that God heard our prayers, I am sure He did. Yet, she died. Why? God is God, we are not. Could God heal? yes! Why didn't he? I don't know. I do not agree with people who say that we must not have enough Faith. Many people who have no faith at all get healed.
I think alot of christians are more healthy than non-christians because they
don't smoke, they don't drink, they are not out all night, they generally have more peaceful homes than non-christians. Therefore, it stands to reason that christians would be more healthy.
God is Sovereign! He can do whatever He wants, where-ever He wants with who-ever He wants. He is God!

I praise God for your healing! :D . Thanks for sharing that.

I agree; it's a very unkind teaching. I read a book about people who would take their glasses off in the parking lot of a 'church' rather than go in wearing them because it would show lack of faith.

And I read a book where a husband describes his wife's death from cancer - what a wonderful witness she was to the end, in her attitude. Yet in the next chapter, albeit graciously, he hints that she must have 'blocked' her own healing.

I don't see anything the least bit biblical about - as you put it - using theology to 'bully' people.

And when God heals people through the medical profession I think that's just as much His doing as when he does it by 'miraculous intervention', as it were.

But - I feel that I would be 'bullying' if I tried aggressively to persuade sincere, growing, witnessing, loving, Christians that 'tongues' is of the devil or simply an emotional experience. If I don't want them to say I lack faith for not practicing what they do, I believe it's only fair that I don't criticize them either, if they aren't being 'bullies' about it.

What bothers me is the "my faith is better than yours" attitude that some Christians seem to imply.

But not all tongue-speaking Christians do that.

No, not all of them do.

Not all catholics tell me I'm going to hell because I reject the eucharist. But enough do that I speak out against the entire faith. That is what I do with the tounge speakers. I have been given just enough grief about not being saved without showing spiritual gifts that I think all tongue speaking is hogwash, & I say so.

And, if speaking in tongues isn't from the Holy Spirit, then from whence doth it come ?

Satan is the author of confusion. That's what my KJV says....

I went to a Word Faith church (not realizing at that time I was in a cult) and they wanted to know if anyone didn't speak in tongues but wanted to...(I grew up in the Pentacostal church who knew that it was associated with the Word Faith movement) any way I went forward and they said you know how a baby goes goo goo ga ga...well they wanted me to practice that...I knew something was wrong and that It was not of God...how lame...If God wants me to speak another language to witness to someone he will give it to me otherwise the speaking in tongues thing is out...no longer required for today....If you will notice that the only ones who actually practice this speaking in tongues is Pentacostals, Vineyard, Word of Faith and a few others in that movement...ever heard a Baptist speak in tongues?</font>[/QUOTE]I have heard Baptist speak in tongues, as well as Episcopals,
There is a branch of the Anglican Church called
    The Charismatic Episcopal Church.
It is estimated that about 20% of Southern Baptist have Charismatic leanings.
This explains the reason that the SBC will not allow a resolution to be voted on on this subject because they fear loosing 1 out of 5 of their active members.

A Baptist who speaks in 'tongues', is no longer a Baptist. God's Word warns that those who turn away their ears from the TRUTH shall be turned unto FABLES and that strong DELUSION will be experienced by those who receive NOT the LOVE of the TRUTH, resulting in their believing a LIE.

We are warned of EVIL men and SEDUCERS who will wax WORSE and WORSE, DECEIVING and BEING DECEIVED. Unbiblical teachings and practices are spreading more rapidly than the wildfires out west.

EVEN SO, COME, LORD JESUS! (Today, perhaps? :)

These kinds of statements are self-righteous and inflammatory, not showing a loving Christian Spirit....the "greatest of these is love."

PS: I AM a Baptist. Was raised a Baptist, am a Baptist PK, and am a member of an Independent Baptist church! And I feel it is not honoring to Jesus Christ to make these kinds of inflammatory posts. :(
