Speaking in Tongues

I'm so glad that someone was there on the day that tongues and interpretation ceased, so that they could let us know that tongues and interpretation had ceased.

Did anyone get the name of that person who was there that day?

No. Biblical tongues have ceased.
I've seen this statement often on this board, (along with many other gifts) and I would like some scriptural backup for it.

Are tongues (and other gifts ) in evidence today? Not that I have observed, but then I'm not privy to everything the Holy Spirit does in peoples lives, so in all honesty I don't know!

I do, however, believe that many (most?) of the "miracle gifts" aren't around today simply because we don't depend on God for our day-to-day living as the 1st century Christians did. Technology has replaced God as our "source" of day-to-day needs.

When the persecutions start and being a Christian could just be a death sentence, I think we'll begin to see the miracles of God once more in the form of gifts AND direct intervention.

Meanwhile, until you can show some scripture to the contrary, I'll contend that the reason you don't see these gifts is our lack of faith and dependence on God; not because He has decreed that they aren't for any but the 1st century Christians!

'Tongues', as practiced today in America, are nothing more than ecstatical gibberish and spiritual conterfeiting. People go off in 'tongues' to show how spiritual they are, and because it is expected of them.

True tongues (languages) are given by God for use in the Body. I do believe that these gifts of language are in use today, but not by all the blabbering idiots on Sunday Morning.

In Christ,

Really? calling these misguided people "blabbering idiots" makes your post look sort of less than acceptable for logic.

Besides, to conclude the whole matter of "tongues", look at Acts 2, they ALL heard them speak in their native tongue, PERIOD.

When I lived in Tiawan I learned to speak a fair amount of Mandarin chinese. When I lived in Italy I learned to speak Italian. When I lived in Korea I learned to speak Korean.I could also understand much of what I heard in those languages. So I can honestly say I have spoken in other tongues and have done some interpreting.

1 Corinthians 13:8
"Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away."

I believe that tongues were taught to have only been temporary. I may be proven wrong but I believe the "tongues shall cease" in 1Cor13.

Now, if my wife were to bust out speaking perfect Hebrew then I would believe it. The tongues were actual languages. But, of course this is just my opinion.

No, not in corporate worship or other church gatherings. However, we do have a few members who speak in tongues privately.

The purpose of "tongues" is to communicate in the language of the people so they will hear the gospel; that's what happened in Acts. Speaking a language that cannot be understood does not build up the Body, but creates confusion and disorder.

I have seen Christian Missionaries granted the gift of tongues. What amazes me is that the times it happens it is not in publicized events with someone putting a big show about it. It is quietly, in prayer groups, where a missionary is searching for the right "native word" to explain the Holy Spirit and Christ, and suddenly they KNOW the words.

Never presume that God cannot do today, what He could do 2,000 years ago.

Don't ignore 1 Corinithians either.

1 Corinithians 12:4-5 There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but the same God works all of them in all men.

The chapter goes on to explain that the Spirit manifests itself in different ways to different people, and the gift one receives may not be the gift the other receives.

Verse 11 says, "All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he gives them to each one, just as he determines."

If a person proclaims to know Christ, and appears to have one of the biblical gifts, and uses that gift for the glory of God, not the glory of himself, - I see no reason to call the person a liar.

On the other hand, if a person goes around bragging, "I have this gift! I'm closer to God than you are because you don't," obviously their heart isn't in the right place.

Back to 1 Corinithians
Verse 16 "And if an ear should say, "Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body," It would not, for that reason, cease to be part of the body. 17 If the whole body were an eye, where would the sense of hearing be? If the whole body were an ear, where would the sense of smell be? 18 But in fact, God has arranged the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be. 19 If they were all one part, where would the body be? 20 As it is, there are many parts, but one body. 21 The eye cannot say to the hand, "I don't need you!" And the head cannot say to the feet, "I don't need you!"

Look at 1 Corinithians 12:29-31
"Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interprety? 31 But eagerly desire the greater gifts.

Look at 1 Corinithians 14:1
"Follow the way of love and eagerly desire spiritual gifts, especially the gift of prophecy.

Then look at verses 9 to 16 to find out the proper way to speak in tongues.

Don't assume God "stopped the gifts" of the Holy Spirit just because they are not needed in your part of the world.

Paul wrote in great detail about tongues, and I cannot say with absolute conviction thay have ceased. However, the first(and last) time I entered a "Holy Roller"(NOT the church bowling team) gathering, I seriously thought I'd entered a LSD party, what with men & women rolling on the floor, babbling incoherently. I was not a Christian at the time, & after seeing THAT, I didn't WANNA be, and I believe that experience was used by the devil to keep me away from Christ for a few years. But since being saved, I HAVE seen what i believe could be genuine examples of people speaking in a tongue not known to the general congregation. All was done exactly according to 1 cor. 12,13, & 14. And the messages were no new doctrines nor prophecies, but were exhortations to be more diligent in one's work for God, reminding us that apostasy will continue to increase.

This was in the first church I attended as a Christian, a nondenom one. After I became a Baptist, I heard more than one Baptist pastor say tongues were possible, but not essential and to not be concerned about it either way.
