Specter Vote For Stimulus Hurts Him Back Home

Senator Arlen Specter is one of only three Republicans to support the economic stimulus bill in Congress, and the latest Rasmussen Reports survey in Pennsylvania shows that his position is costing him support back home.

Just 31% of Keystone State voters say are more likely to vote for Specter because of his position on the stimulus package while 40% are less likely to do so.

A look inside the numbers shows the problem for Specter may be even more significant. Fifty-eight percent (58%) of Republican voters in the state are less likely to vote for Specter. Among voters not affiliated with either major party, just 27% are more likely to support the long-time incumbent while 48% are less likely to do so.

Specter got a pretty good challenge last time in the Republican primary, but beat it back. Let's hope the GOP comes up with a conservative candidate this time who can take the nomination.

My guess is, my hope is, that Senator Santorium will defeat Spector in 2010.

Specter is certainly a moderate and the party has moved far right so I don't think he stood a chance either way. What this means is the GOP machine won't be in his corner for this next election which is how he narrowly won last time. I believe his cancer is back so not sure if he should run for another term.

Yeah, and he's 79 years old. According to Daschle he shouldn't try and battle that cancer either. Old people like him should just give up.

Here is an article on why he crossed the line. He was able to secure another $10 Billion for the Health Institutes. I suspect they will contribute heavily to his reelection.

But even lobbyists are stunned by the coup Mr. Specter pulled off this week. In return for providing one of only three Republican votes in the Senate for the Obama administration’s $787 billion economic stimulus package, he was able to secure a 34 percent increase in the health agency’s budget — to $39 billion from $29 billion.

Excellent reasoning. For 1.2% of the total package, he sold the American people into the slavery of debt. That's a cheap price for a vote. I don't think he could have gotten the Illinois Senate seat for that paltry amount. Even Blago had a higher price tag.

Now if Specter had managed to stop the rest of the bill so that it became only a $10 billion dollar bill, it would be worth praising. It still wouldn't stimulate the economy, but it would be a cheaper failure than this present failure is going to be.

Don't you believe it, it's just wishfull thinking.
There's no love lost between Republicans and Arlen Spector in Pennsylvania.
He's had a checkered voting record for years.
I'd guess that those of us that don't like his support of the 'Stimulate the Govt' bill haven't voted for him for years anyway.

Back when "W" was campaigning for his second term the President stopped by Bucks County and gave a speech with Arlen Spector and others.
It was exciting; I've never seen a POTUS live before.
A chant arose "Four More Years, Four More Years".

Well Arlen got up on the stump and tried to duplicate the emotion,
but he said he had to change the chant since senators have six year terms.
He started it for us, "Six More Years..."
...no one chanted along with him. :tongue3:

Why did he narrowly beat the Republican in the primary?

Guesses???
He's an incumbent Senator, he's powerful, there's that name recognition thing.

How did he beat the Democrat by such a large margin?

Democrats, lot's of dem vote for him.

There's been a rumor that has run about in the past regarding his changing parties.
It isn't true, but there's enough of a suspicion that it's a fear.

The Party moved right??? The GOP's leftward movement is what left us conservatives out in the cold.... And I view a :moderate conservative a "liberal".

Which is how we voted in the last election and is why the Democrats are in charge. When and only when the Republican's welcome our views we'll put them back in office. But until then, the Democrats have welcomed us to their ranks though we are not totally happy with this bill...

That hits it right on the head. I hope Specter is beat by a conservative, I really do not care which party he or she is from. Since Democrat and Republican stand for nothing, and are basically synonyms, what difference does it make?

Perhaps Lynn Swann would run for this office. Does anyone know more about Swann and how conservative he would be? I think this could be a smart move for Republicans!

Don't think for one moment that moderates in either party are the decisive votes. The Democrats are in charge because conservatives either didn't vote, or voted Democrat to punish their party, and it looks like they're getting the message.

I hope they learn their lesson this time, and ignore the press and the cavils of "bipartisan" Marxists and push a conservative agenda when they get back in power.

Well, if they don't do a better job of ignoring the MSM, and all the leftists soundbites calling for "bi-partisanship" (HA!!) than they have for the last 10-15 years, there ain't gonna be no conservative agenda!

"Turn on the lights" said the blind man. You really can't see...

You must be kidding. You will never see a true republican vote democrat. No matter how mad he is at his party he will always hate democrats more. Same with Democrats, a true democrat wouldn't be caught dead voting republican.

The people you see moving back and forth are the progressive/moderates. We who stand in the middle and can see some good and bad in both philosophical views and don't have a problem voting for either party. Neither party can go anywhere without us yet you fail to acknowledge we have the power.

Think of it this way...

There are xxx Republican's
There are yyy Democrats

These are the people who will always vote their party no matter what. That's what makes them a party loyalist.

To win you must campaign and attract us folks in the middle who will move either direction. Why the GOP lost is because the ones in the middle went left. That's what is meant when a Republican by name says my party has gone too far to the right. That is a moderate saying you are too conservative for my blood...

Wrong. To win one must mobilize the base. The base stayed home on Nov. 4.
