Spiritual Worship

    Never have I seen such a mountain made out of a molehill.

    Ps 66:1 Make a joyful noise unto God, all ye lands.

    That says to me you should have a strong emotion (joy), that it doesn't have to be perfect or even very good (noise), and that it worships and praises God. It does not specify a time or place, just that everyone everywhere should do so. It is a noise unto God, not towards the congregation or an audience. This is worshipful.

    Aaron is right in this...

    The object of worship is our Father.

    The form is in Spirit and in truth...

    What does this mean...
    Since our Spirit is confined in flesh and bone, does that mean we have to lose our body to truly worship God? Of course not... it means our Spirit worships God through our body.

    Let's look at the context in which Christ made this statement...

    He was talking to the woman at the well.. a Samaritan woman...
    We also need to note that Samaritans believe that true worship could only be done on Mount Gerizim... a physical place..
    The Jews had also warped worship into something physical... In Jerusalem, with all the physical rites and ceremonies....

    Jesus is simply telling here that since God is a spirit, Humans must connect spiritually with God before true worship can be had. And this connection is not associated with places, or things... but with the spirit.

    Now we come to worshipping in "truth"..

    Again, look at the person he was talking to... a Samaritan.
    The Samaritans believed that only the first 5 books of the Bible were inspired... and, only their authorized version at that...

    Now, if you only knew God from the first 5 books of the Bible, what would you think of Him...
    I would think that he was a judgmental God with a lot of rules and regs, and if I stepped out of line, he was anxious to pour out his wrath on me...
    It is not until we get to the later part of the OT, that we see a lot of patience on God's part with Isreal...

    You would also try to approach God through sacrifices.. which were only shadows of something to come... Calvary...

    You would also know God as I AM. From the Burning bush incident...

    Now with all of that, look at John 4:25
    Jesus tells here true worship is to be done in Spirit and in Truth...
    She immediately connects truth to the messiah, and says...
    "I know that Messiah is coming, the One called Christ. When that One comes, He will announce to us all things."
    And he says to her...
    "I AM! the     One speaking to you" Notice his use of the words "I AM" in the Greek... He is speaking truth to her... and she realizes it...
    The way we worship by Truth is to worship God, not ceremonies...
    And worship Him for who he is, not what he has done for us...
    Jesus revealed Himself to her... And she saw the truth....

    So what did Jesus mean?
    By Spirit, we are not tied to the physical places to worship God.
    By Truth, we are to worship the one true God... The one the Bible reveals.


    So how do we apply this today...

    We Worship God (the true God)...The Father, The Son, The Holy Ghost...
    We Worship Him for WHO he is, not what we get out of it... (Good feelings are something we get also...so to worship him in order to get good feelings is emotionalism...)
    And we are not tied to a physical place to worship him... some say, they come to church to worship God.... WRONG!!! We should not Bind worship to church... we should come to church already worshipping God...
    Nor should we bind worship to the physical aspects that we use as tools in order to worship.... Music, lighting, testimonies, where we are, music styles, etc... all those are physical tools we use to worship God... but without any of those, we can still worship God because true worship stems out of our Spirit because of Who God is...



    Worship God through Spirit and Truth...

    There is no personal meaning. The meaning is universal and non-optional.

    In the beginning was the Word.

    My house shall be called the house of prayer.

    Till I come, give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine.

    Wherefore let him that speaketh in an [unknown] tongue pray that he may interpret.

    Today, when one thinks of worship, he's generally thinking about music or some other stimulation of the emotions. They're usually thinking of good feelings about God: love, devotion, admiration, etc. And that becomes the focus. But spiritual worship should evoke thoughts of Word or communication. Teaching and learning, instruction and obedience, authority and submission.

    A great many, but that wasn't my question. You said that ignoring, scorning would be a better term, the Commandments is a hinderance to true worship. One is taking an active role in disobedience.

    My question was of those who are simply ignorant of the Commands, those who are passively disobedient. Can they truly worship?

    That's a carnal view of the Law. Love is it's fulfillment. Therefore, when we read the Law, we should see what love is and what it requires. We should be struck by our own unrighteousness and total depravity, and our worthiness of each judgment and curse pronounced by the Law on evildoers.

    We should see that God is love, and that we are neither lovers nor lovely.
