Charles Spurgeon ought not to be a model for anyone. He was just a mere man, a mortal man and a sinner. He smoked, and whether one smokes cigars or cigarrettes they do not contain any vitamins or trace minerals the human organism is in need of, nor any proteins, carbs, or fatty acids. If his smoking was not called forth out of an inward law of faith it was sin. He who does not understand nor accept the teaching of God in the Bible on this is a fool. In addition, what most do not consider is Spurgeon was a teacher of heresy. He was a duty faith man, and a free offer man. Such a man my Bible commands to shun and mark. His 5 point Calvinism means nothing if he is amiss when it comes to faith. His founding of pastor's college or whatever receives no sanction from the New Testament. A true local assembly in God the Father and in the Lord Jesus Christ (1Thess.1:1) is the only pillar and ground of the truth on earth, not pastor's colleges and seminaries etc. Those are man-made institutions and usually places where heresies abound and liberalism and modernism and like iniquities. Spurgeon was ecumenical too if I am rightly informed, and sanctioned that arminian Moody when he came to England for his "crusade". Only a few men opposed, among them faithful J K Popham of the Gospel Standard Baptists. Ye err when ye call bitter sweet, and when ye do not know the hard but true facts of history.

That's the problem, Harald - you state "my Bible." You should listen to THE Bible. Thank God for men like Spurgeon!!! Since when is "duty faith" and the "free offer" heresy? Only "high" Calvinists (hyper-Calvinists) bristle at duty faith and the free offer. Are you a "high" Calvinist, Harald? If so, then shun and mark me because all people everywhere are commanded to repent of their sins and place their faith in Christ. Shun and mark me, because the free offer goes to all.

Well, Harald, you have your J K Popham which I am sure you hold in high regard, and you would not appreciate anyone calling him a teacher of heresy.
Now, in this board, there are many, including some non-"Calvinists" who hold Spurgeon in high esteem.
Now, I've read about Gospel Standard Baptists and
am in agreement with most of their doctrines on salvation.
I request you clarify why you call Spurgeon a teacher of heresy.
    Thank you.

pinoybaptist. If it interests you here is an article which criticizes Spurgeon as an exegete

    http://www.covprc.org/spurg4.htm

Needless to say I do not agree with the writer's rejection of immersion as the proper mode of baptism. If need be I may post more which evidences the man Spurgeon is not what his modern day fans make him out to be. If yourself are familiar with the heresies of duty faith and duty repentance (and the related free offer heresy) it should be clear why many faithful preachers of the past and of the present have criticized Spurgeon and his proclamation and his theology. If the terms are unfamiliar you may Google e.g. "duty faith", and should be able to find some Scriptural criticism of this heresy. I could give specific links myself, but think it better you do some research yourself if you are interested in learning some truths concerning this matter. Having said this little so far does not mean I claim all that Spurgeon preached was heretical. He said much which was Scriptural, to that is no need for denying, but he was contradicting the Scriptures of truth on certain points on a continual basis, and that is serious, cp. Isa. 8:20, 1Tim.6:3-5. Continual and habitual teaching of false, Bible-contradicting, doctrine is heresy if I am not too mistaken re the word heresy.

    sincerely,
    Harald

For more on this duty-faith idea, here is Arthur W. Pink's take on the subject and the erroneous position of the Gospel Standard Articles of Faith:

Duty faith and duty repentance and the related free offer of the Gospel is NOT heresy. The heresy is Hyper-Calvinism. For a good article on Hyper-Calvinism please see C. Matthew McMahon's article, "A Brief Critique of Hyper-Calvinism," which can be found at www.apuritansmind.com/PuritanWorship/McMahonABriefCritiqueOfHyper-Calvinism

A good book dealing with the issue is Iain Murray's, SPURGEON VS. HYPER-CALVINISM (Banner of Truth).

Since this topic is getting away from the original question, I'm starting a new thread on this page.
