ST: Discovery vs The Orville

Both are garbage. Orville is full of middle school level sexual innuendo (but it is what you would expect from the emotionally retarded Seth MacFarlane who gave us the equally childish and trashy Family Guy) and Discovery is just dumb. The producers have abandoned Gene Roddenberry's positive view of the future for a dark and pessimistic outlook.
Apples and oranges. Orville is a semi-satire of Star Trek, whereas Discovery is a serious drama. ST Discovery is the better show.
Still, I would rather watch Orville because it is more entertaining, and oddly seems truer to the Star Trek legacy than Discovery. ST Discovery basically threw ST continuity out the window and created a whole new story. ST Discovery doesn't need the Star Trek label because it could be any new sci-fi story, just change the name of the Klingons to something else, change the name of the Federation to something else and you're good to go.

I didn't make a comparison. I critiqued both shows on their own merits. Which are sadly lacking for both programs, in my opinion.
I wasn't responding to you, just generically making an observation.
That's kind of what The Orville did. The Federation becomes The Union and those pesky Klingons become the Krill.
The only reason I'm watching Discovery is because I was already a subscriber to the CBS All Access service. If I wasn't, I would not have subscribed just for Discovery.

ST Discovery is set 10 years before ST TOS. The Klingons said they haven't had contact with any Federation ships for over 100 years. Then they claim they've got to do something about this "problem" where the Federation lies when they say: "we come in peace". The Klingons want to remain Klingons, they say. Well, how hard is that to do if you've had no contact with the Federation in 100 years? So, instead they set a trap virtually guaranteeing interaction.
The Klingons are completely different. They are very alien looking, and since they speak their own language the use of subtitles is extensive (And they talk a lot!) How many times are they going to change the appearance of the Klingons? (just a minor gripe...)
How many Federation starships are there? During Kirk and Spock's era I was under the impression there were maybe a dozen or less. This show predates that era. Yet at the climatic battle scene it appears there is an entire armada.
How strong is Captain Georgiou? The diminutive captain goes hand-to-hand combat with a Klingon warrior and almost wins.
The amount of arguing and contradiction of orders, esp. on the bridge was kind of startling, not anywhere in line with TOS, TNG, or any iteration of ST.
Would a starship captain condone hiding a bomb inside a corpse? That seems a bit nasty and unethical.
One thing that stayed consistent--disobedience of the Prime Directive, or as they called it in Discovery, "The First Rule", very Orville-esque, that. (I can't remember exactly what it was they called the Prime Directive, but it caused me to laugh out loud.)
Starting with the newest Star Trek movies, and culminating with Discovery -- it seems to me these producers/creators are "trying to do Star Trek better than Gene Roddenberry." And not succeeding.
Orville? I've watched it. It's failing because of the stupid middle-school humor, and because it doesn't appear to know whether it's a comedy with dramatic bits,or a drama with comedic bits, or trying to be something else. Frankly, I wouldn't be surprised if McFarland admits he didn't expect it to get past the first episode before being cancelled.

I watched a little bit of the Orville, very little... When the bit came on about the male genitalia, off it went... Star Trek Discovery?... First of all I didn't have a chance to see the free one and I'm sure not paying any more money for CBS Access... There are reruns of old Star Trek series on BBC, and spin offs of many wannabes with marathons on every now and then... I enjoy the programs but I'm not a died in the wool Trekkie... I remember the words of William Shatner after he saw all these Trekkies dressed up in their alien costumes... Don't these people have a life?... Talk about biting the hand that feeds you?... Oh well... Beam me up Scottie!... Brother Glen
NEITHER are that good, but at least Orville has Jonathan Frankes, number 1, directing it, so he should know Star trek!

I have watched season one of both. It would be like choosing between an apple and an orange. Star Trek: Discovery can be taken to be more serious story line. The Orville is not not serious in it stories, but more diverse. I liked both.
