Isn't it??? I love going into the church and seeing history. When we got the building, there was old icky linoleum floor in the fellowship hall but when we pulled it up, there were GORGEOUS wood floors. The only staircase in the building was one that came from the front of the church (next to the altar area) and went downstairs and it was an amazingly dangerous set of stairs! It drops the full floor in such a small space and it curves so it's very much like the stairs on a ship (which makes sense since it's a seaside town). I just imagine the women in their big skirts trying to make it down there safely and I shudder! LOL

I stand by my original conclusion:

No Church is sinning simply by having a steeple.

No Church is sinning simply by not having a steeple.

I know a pastor who started a church about 12 years ago and believes that churches should not typically own buildings. They have planted about 40 churches since. Most of them are doing very well. They only own one building. The others meet in rented buildings and move to larger buildings as they grow.

We're meeting in a hotel - not even a rented space that's our own. I don't mind renting if it was our own space but without having our own space, we have no "presence" in the community yet. But we're praying and watching for a retail space or some other place that we can begin to set down roots. We found an AWESOME place - an old movie theater (a small one) that became an OTB and it's a stand-alone building but the owner won't rent to a church. :(

Where I live now that is rather common. Churches cannot rent public owned buildings except for special functions but not long term.

I've never heard of that!! We have a number of storefront churches here on Long Island. Mostly black churches or Pentacostal.

Wouldnt that be against the law? here is a link for govt owned buildings

I am still looking to see if a private owner can discriminate.

Neither had I until I moved here. However I know that cities can choose to rent to nobody for long term.

True, but if there policy is to rent to some groups, a city cannot discriminate against churches

I'm not sure but it's not important enough to wreck our testimony and fight it. There are other buildings and if God wants us to have this one, He can move mountains. :D

They will rent to churches short term, such as not more than four weeks.

Cities can determine what they want to do the same for everyone. They can choose to not rent to anyone if they want.

But in our case, they are privately owned buildings - not government owned.
