Stop Yappin' & Listen On Occasion

I wonder how many people who attend church are so intimidated and fearful of ridicule they simply sit there and listen? Never to open their mouf's and ask a question? Never to ask confirmation or seek insight over one Bible issue or another?

For example. On this forum..., because it's a Debate Forum..., and because so many folks are thousands of miles apart it's relatively easy to take pot shots at others only to then smugly retreat via the "sign out" tab. To harshly imply how dumb another might be and how smart "you'se" be.

Preachers preach. They get paid to preach. That's all they do is preach. That's their job. Every service it's..., preach, preach, preach. Normally, it's, You gotta get saved! You gotta get saved! You gotta get saved!

Sunday School? Nope. Sunday School does not necessarily provide answers to those specific question's the younger crowd might have.

So, do any of you have a time set aside where in you just sit and listen, vice preaching..., constantly? To explore and satisfy individual fears, anxieties, frustrations, questions, etc., so as to allow others a better understanding of the Word? To unbutton your shirt and ease the tie knot, kick up your feet and say, "Lets talk?

Women's Meetings? Nope. Bless their little pea pickin' hearts usually at any women's meeting they all end up talking at the same time to each other. Obviously, someone isn't listening.

A meeting of the men? Nope. A men's meeting usually ends up like a segment of "Tool Time".

What is "vice preaching"? I would guess preaching that is against vices, but it does not fit the sentence.

I think he meant "vice" in the preposition sense, as "instead of" not an immoral habit.

To the OP:You still seem awfully defensive for some reason. You claimed (in the other thread) you have thick skin but posting like this indicates the opposite.

As to your questions. Yes I have plenty of time where I just sit and listen and am taught. There are plenty of times where I have good, godly conversations with others that are more than debate.

Your sweeping, negative statements against small groups and even preaching itself are really just silly. And I can't imagine a pastor on the planet who would agree with this:

I've been blessed in my life to have parents who were well equipped to do just that as I grew up. They listened and they answered my questions for the most part, God answers the rest.
The truth is God's word has all the answers. All we need do is ask Him in prayer. He might answer right away and some times He may take His time to answer. Some times He directs us to the answers in His Word.

You ask that as if half the population isn't instructed to do this.

I get what you're saying in your post. You probably already know that many are not simply yapping, but that they also listen, meditate, pray, read, seek.

Keep in mind many of us preachers listen to others during the week, read commentaries, pray, listen to sermonaudio.com, (I do) and mljtrust.org (I do that too); listen to radio sermons (I do that) and listen to and read other resources.

So for a proportion of preachers it's probably safe to say many do a lot more listening than they do 'yapping'. But then the fire burns (Jeremiah 20:9) and they must speak as they are called to do so, yet not all of these are formal pastors.

I would not resolve that all they do is yap. Those who labor in the Word are worthy of double honor (1 Timothy 5:17), not the cynicism present in the church today.

That would be their problem, such timidity is not of God (2 Timothy 1:7), but is to be blamed on their own selves.

I don't see the above as an issue other than it is probable that many simply do not study, read, pray, seek, and from my perspective some barely ever grow in knowledge and grace (2 Peter 3:18), yet it is much more safe for them to blame that on the pulpit and blame it on 'timidity'.

p4truth, I know you do. To be honest, my thread title was a bit sarcastic on purpose.

While in attendance in a Baptist Church in upState New York many years ago the pastor (perhaps in his late 70's) made a comment and I responded with, "Amen!" You could hear the necks creaking of those who turned to see who it was what caused the disruption. I thought it a bit funny.

In many churches about the only thing some can do to participate, is tithe. It's that ridged and so straight laced that many just attend and never become involved. Church family members whoop it up and have a fine time but the outsiders..., not a chance.

Reminds me of a thing I heard. This fellow enters a church, just converted and excited. Everything the preacher said brought an excited 'Amen!!!' from him.

A deacon in front of him became irritated. Suddenly this deacon told him to settle down, and the young convert said (not being theologically accurate, mind you) 'I can't help it, I found Jesus!!!' to which the old deacon said, 'You didn't find Him here!!!'
