the Ryrie Study Bibles are ok
I also like the Rainbow Study Bible
for its simplicity and no commentairys but does provide an extensive scripture reference.
I also think that a exhaustive concordinance
and Hebrew, Greek and aramik strongs, lexicons is essential for a thurrough bible study.

 

I would love to find some good books on the background of each book of the Bible. Any suggestions?

 

I've never found a true study Bible that I like. They are all bent towards some system of belief. Even the one's that have a lot of "facts" in them tend to have a lot of opinion as well. So I stick with the Bible alone. I use commentaries and lexica when I reaaly want to dive into something.

I've been using a Thompson Chain Reference Bible for years. It's a tremendous work, and contains Strong's numbers for even more cross-referencing.

One of the study tools I came across recently was Reece's chronological Bible (KJV). It provides a unique way of reading the Word.

 

In English the best one is the Harpers Collins Study Bible, followed by the New Oxford Study Bible, for the Old Testament I like the Jewish Study Bible.

In Spanish The Reina Valera 1995 Edicion de Estudio, and among the Roman Catholic Bibles, the Jerusalem Bible and La Biblia del Peregrino (3 vol)

When I want to laugh I read some of the Scofield Bible notes.

I have the nelson Open Bible

 

Best is the one that makes you read the scripture and think on it ...
Personally i prefer my bible without notes, and use seperate aids to make me think and give me knowledge.
Stops me getting too much tied to the thoughts of just one man or groop of people

Give me that 1917 KJV Scofield Reference Study Bible every time. If it was good enough for the Apostle Paul, it is good enough for me. Besides at my advanced age, if I changed Bibles it would never be able to find anything. After 40 years with that text I'm hooked!

I have the Nelson Open Bible KJV and I really like it. I agree with Ben. Anything by Nelson is good.

 

I wore my MacArthur's Study Bible out. Had to buy a new one. One of the best study bibles on the market!

The cross references alone are worth the price of the bible!

Most will say "whatever study bible I use ".

Seriously, the NIV Study Bible is a good reference, and is relatively inexpensive.

 

If you use Internet Explorer then you can download ie spell. It will not force you to edit your entries, but will help with spelling.

I'm waiting for a Bible that includes all of Scofields notes along with Ryrie and McArthur's notes. Oh, and don't forget the Life Application notes along with Thompsons chain references.

The only other requirement would for this Bible to have an easy to read large print and be available in a Thinline version. Not too much to ask, right?

 

I have the both the KJV Open Bible, and the KJV Study Bible by Nelson. Both of the Bibles have alot of the same info, but KJV Study Bible has even more. I also have the NIV Stdent Bible,I use it sometime for cross references, but I prefer the KJV. I agree Thomas Nelson Publishers rock!!!

 

I would like to throw in that the Defender's Study Bible is great. The notes are by Henry Morris of ICR fame. I have the hardback, and use it quite often as a devotional/study bible. I do not like to carry a study bible to church because I find myself reading the notes instead of listening at times. I usually use a 1762 Cambridge text only KJV at church when I teach, preach, or just fill the pew.
