Super Bowl Sunday, what does your church do?

Just curious, does your church bow to the Super Bowl or do they go on with Christian Service as normal?

Well right now we have no Sunday evening services, but in years past the game was so late we could have service and choir practice and still make it home for the game. To answer your question we do not change services for the Super Bowl under normal conditions... Especially if Tom Brady is playing...haha

If any Church were to cancel or change a service so that some can attend any sporting event, then that "church" does NOT represent the Lord, and should be closed down! I remember many years ago here in England, when at a mid-week Bible study, half way through a group of guys left to watch a soccer match! This is a diagrace, and they should have been told not to bother to come back. The Lord is always first!

When I read your post - it remanded me about a Billy Graham I saw. This woman was concerned that her son did not go to Bible College to become a preacher. Rather he chose to be an auto mechanic. So she goes to her pastor as she wants her son to be a great witness for Christ. Well the pastor had filmed her son at the garage - and it showed him being a witness to his customers and inviting them to church.

So by your friend going to this soccer match, may be a way to witness to his friend! Of course we should be at Bible study -but in this case he possibly was applying what he learned! Next time you see this friend, ask him!

As far as the Super Bowl - It is not necessarily a matter of cancelling the service - rather using that evening it as an evangelist tool - a time that some who would never otherwise come inside a church building.......

Yes, our church tries to utilize Halloween as an outreach opportunity. Some members set up a "coffee/tea waystation" where the escort adults can be engaged in friendly conversation about home and community.

So those churches that stopped having in-person services because of covid do "NOT represent the Lord...who is always first?"

What if they did not cancel a service but instead held a time of fellowship that included the event?

A few years back, we changed our second Sunday service time to 2:30 PM. We also added a lunch catered by the church right after the AM service.

How's that?
Yes or No: If a church service is canceled for any reason, is that putting whatever reason first ahead of God?

Not necessarily - lots of good reasons to cancel a scheduled church service.

lets put this in simple English. When a person attends a Church service, it is NOT to meet with your friends, or have a cup of tea, etc, it is to worship the Living God of the Bible, and to glorify His Name, and to sing praises to His Glory, and to hear a message about His Greatness, and to encourage each other in the Lord. People who go to a service so that they can show "attendance", and then leave during it for the sake of going to watch some game, or shopping, etc, do NOT have their hearts right before the Lord, as their interests are elsewhere! If you think that it is ok to do as you please, then that is your personal choice, but I will always disagree

WHY should they? if a Church has certain set services, which should be the Lord's time, to worship Him and to praise Him, and to hear His Word read and expounded, the this should not be changed for some fleshly thrill! Too many Christians are these days being very ungodly in their approach to their Faith, and much of the world has crept into the Church. Can you for a moment imagine in the OT, when the Jews had those services to worship the Lord, where the Lord appeared to them, and they were caught up in woship of Him. During such a godly time, they stopped the service to have a football match, or some other worldly event?

a great idea, but not change the time of a service, where the message is cut, so that people can get somewhere. God ought to be first, and His time should be for Him, and not us.

The PM service was just as long as it normally would be.

there are some Churches here in England, that have also changed the time of the second service, from 6 to 3 or 4, so that they can include a lunch and time of fellowship after the morning service. I think that this is a good thing, as there are some folk who travel long distances, and have small children, which makes getting home for lunch difficult, as it gets quite late.
