Super Bowl Sunday

I don't care what you do for Super Bowl Sunday. I will not label you as a compromiser if you do something different than I do. If you feel like having a Super Bowl Celebration, fine. If you feel like moving your service up an hour, fine. If you feel like canceling your P.M. service, fine. You do what you feel led to do - I will not look down on you, call you worldly, claim you are a compromiser, or any such thing. Personally, I don't care what you do. Do whatever you feel the Lord leading you to do.

Why is this not the feelings of some churches toward other churches? Why do we have to stick our nose in everyone else's business? We say we believe in local autonomy, but do we really?

It's not a violation of autonomy to have an opinion, especially if you post what you are going to do.

We'll move our Sunday night service to 5 pm and do our regular thing. (Doing Dr. Lutzer's study on "One Minute After You Die"). And dismiss in time so people, including me, can get home for the game.

In my 1st church, i asked the deacons if they thot we should change our PM service for the Super bowl. They said "Absolutely not!" On that sunday night, not a single one attended the service. I learned from that. :laugh:

We don't have a Sunday p.m. service anyway, so nothing in that way is changed. As usual, we have a class party at a member's home. Several years ago, for at least 2 years, the church rented a skating rink, showed the game on a big screen, with smaller rooms and other screens, and had a speaker with a sports/competition related message at halftime. I know we stopped doing that before there started being trouble with putting "Super Bowl Party" on a sign or church letterhead; so it was probably budgeting.

Now... I really don't trust a post like the OP in this thread, declaring what s/he is not going to be judging somebody else for. That's like one of those common phony disclaimers, like "Not to be making excuses, but..." or "I'm not one to carry tales, but..." At least the "but" was left out the OP, though.

One church I belonged to always had some of the best Lord's Suppers I have ever been a part of... they were tremendous. These occurred on Sunday Nights and one year it happened to fall on Super Bowl Sunday. This celebration often lasted 1 1/2 hours to 2 hours. Honestly, I do not remember who was in the Super Bowl that year. However, I do remember that year we had a packed house to celebrate the Lord's Supper. It was a wonderful and powerful night. I could think of nothing I would prefer to do than what we did that night.

I will not be watching the Super Bowl... you have to own a television to watch it. So, we will be at church. In fact, I really don't know when the Super Bowl is...

I did not ask what you were doing for Super Bowl Sunday. I am not judging - that was the point. I am tired of those who do. Sorry you didn't understand.

We have several small groups in the church and each of those are purposely inviting non-Christians at that time.

One of you is a judge. How can you judge until you have all the facts. Read Romans 2 it is possible you are mentioned.

If you're actually debating this question, it might be time to actually consider if pm Sunday services in general are right for your congregation.

I actually think there is strong reason to do away with them, while not necessarily doing away with all Sunday evening activities.

Sunday evening is when most ministry is done in the chruch I pastor. Before I came they had several services. Now we meet in small groups and disciple people. The fruit from discipleship shows. Before that the chruch was on the road to a sure death.

Most people have the most time on Sunday and it should be wisely invested in two things that last for eternity--God's word and people.

I don't understand. What does football have to do with church? Should church be canceled on Weds night so I can stay home and watch American Idol?

Rescheduling church around a football game? :BangHead:

What so ever is not of The Faith is sin.

Watching steroid dependent men in tight pants chasing the skin of a pig sounds like an interesting pastime. Not sure it will suffice as a substitute for worship of the true and living God. He is very jealous of that sort of thing.

Interesting what Tertullian had to say about "The Games" --the ones where the Christians were devoured by the lions, bears, tigers etc., not long after Jesus was here. See the writings of Tertullian--"On the Games".

I recently figured out I could save $200 a month by disconnecting the television and the internet. Wow. How many Bibles would that buy?
