Did you drink any coffee today? Tea? Water, anyway? Did you comb your hair? Brush anything off your clothes? Listen to the news? Scratch an itch? Do anything in the bathroom? And which of these came of faith? They must be a sin if they didn't.

The football (if that's what you mean) has not been made of anything of pig for a long time. And most of the players won't be chasing it; most will be blocking and tackling-- trying, anyway.

It ain't any such substitute. Someone has remarked here she will stay home from church because of illness. Is He jealous of that?

I understand your concerns but I would like to point out that one does not have to go so far as to belittle sports in making your points. The point to which you took the matter would likely alienate the Apostle Paul who was almost unquestionably a sports fan. As you are probably aware, Paul's letters are full of references to sports and games and his knowledge of these things seems to be in depth.

Paul thought that the devotion of an athlete to his sport was a good illustration for the Christian as to how he should train for the even more important battle we face.

I have little doubt that much has been written about the ancient games and we know that Christians were often victimized in these proceedings, but what does this have to do with enjoying athletic competitions. Most Pauline scholars believe Paul likely attended the Isthmus games in Corinth which were held during his time there. If this is true, what does that say about Paul? That he was human and enjoyed a good competition as we also do? This is all that many Christians will be doing during the Super Bowl.

Lastly, there are many ways that we could all cut expenses and use that money to further the work of the Lord. I pray that the money that you have freed up will further Christ's work in a powerful way. I appreciate that you were not stating that to show how much holier you are than everyone else.

As for me, I will be preaching Super Bowl Sunday Evening. We will continue our series through Colossians and we will likely have our regular Sunday Night turnout. I look forward to the service and, afterward, I look forward to the game.

We actually don't have Sunday evening services so it isn't an issue for us.

We'll probably have a few families over and have a good time. I love football...all other sports are a waste of time (except hockey but I don't have cable anymore so we can't see those games.)

I don't understand. What does football have to do with church? Should church be canceled on Weds night so I can stay home and watch American Idol?

Amy, I am in agreement with you, however, in the interest of full disclosure, my church does not have sunday evening services only Sunday morning and then small groups during the week. We also have multiple opportunities to perform community service and ministry with respect to many local service agencies.

I don't think you should cancel church. But I don't think you should hold people in contempt that don't attend that evening. It's the biggest sports spectacle in the world. It's not a huge deal to miss one sunday night. Of course there are others that could care less about football, so there's no point in canceling.

A couple of Sundays ago--we canceled PM services because of incliment weather that was predicted---so we were home by lunch and didn't have to go back for nite church-------when 6pm rolled around I felt so guilty for dismissing church

I've never dismissed nite church because of the super bowl or any other matter for that matter----I've always been too afraid that the Lord Jesus would come back and there I'll be watching football when I knew full well I should have been in church doing what I like to do best----preaching!!!

I don't normally attend Sunday night services so I won't be doing anything out of the ordinary.

I will probably watch a portion of the game, but I'm guessing I'll be asleep by halftime, lol. I've always been the "early to bed, early to rise" person (not that I can tell I'm any wiser for it lol). Add that to the meds I'm on for my back right now and yeah, I'll be lucky to make it to half time. :laugh:

I really don't have a dog in this fight (being a Falcons fan. Poor Falcons), but I'm guessing I'll throw my cheers toward the Steelers.

At the heart of this thread is the question, "do we worship the church as a temple where God meets with us or are we the ever present church & body of Christ?" Those who think it is ridiculous to ever cancel a service are using man's tradition as their standard. Where Scripture is silent(where & when of assembling), I will not form a doctrine nor suffer from unScriptural guilt.

Our church cancels evening services several times a year for varying reasons. The pastor always dismisses morning service with an encouragement to spend time with our families. That is the difference between a preacher-centered church & a family-centered church. We all choose our priorities based on what is most important to us. Some of us just don't preach our priorities as gospel.

We have different services, classes, Bible studies, training events, etc at our church. We have a chapel where there is a list of people who take shifts so that someone is in there praying 24/7.

So if a person wanted, he could be involved in our church to the point that he would never even have to leave the building. He could theoretically cloister himself away there like a monk.

But we don't ask anyone to. We don't ask or expect anybody to be there every time the doors are open.

I don't have a problem with someone who takes a week off once in a while. I know that there are days when I'm not scheduled to preach and that I don't have a class that I may take that day off and not go to church. The problem is when you begin to miss multiple weeks or when those things you miss church for become more important than fellowshipping with other believers in a corporate service.

To say that somebody is bad or necessarily sinning because they want to miss one service is legalism.
