Supreme Court Kills D.C. Hand Gun Ban

The U.S. Supreme Court has just ruled that the District of Columbia hand gun ban is unconstitutional.

Further, the court ruled that Amendment II is an individual right and not just applicable to militias.

Wow! 219 years for the wisest in our land to learn how to read the Bill of Rights.

Thank God they were honest!

Wow, this one is going to sound different coming from me...

Having grown up in DC, and still having lots of friends and family there, I can understand the desire of the DC government to curb the sale of hand guns in one of the most violent cities in America.

With that said, this is a far better decision than many the SC has made recently.

Does D.C. have a state militia? If not, how could one possibly try to argue that a ban would be constitutional? This would mean that no one could have a gun, because there is no militia there... :BangHead:

Well, the ban on handguns hasn't actually done anything to help the situation. There are annually more murders there since the ban than there were before the ban, while the murder rate has generally dropped everywhere else.

Furthermore, The legal availability of handguns to law-abiding citizens may likely quell the desire for criminals to commit violence crime. When they know that they may have to face well-armed resistance, they may reconsider their plans.

And in regard to the highly-publicized massacres around the country (including one here in Fort Worth) over the two decades, one or two well-trained persons with concealed medium to large caliber handguns could have ended those incidents rather quickly before the casualties escalated.

There are an estimated 6.6 million guns in Montana. We have a very low murder/home invasion rate, even in our "cities".

Expect several NRA-sponsored challenges to existing gun laws, in crime-ridden cities like Boston.

A good day, for a change.

That's what - 17 guns per person?

 Yup, that's about it...

Actually, while there are plenty of privately owned weapons, we also have a lot of hunting outfitters, & gun ranges, so the numbers are a little skewed.....

I'm in AL and I confess to owning.....more than one handgun. :D
I'm in Texas and I have two... but I'd also like to pick up a Sig P229, a .40 caliber conversion kit for my Sig P250, and perhaps a small, lightweight revolver for an emergency pocket weapon.

I've also been eyeing a stock Mossberg 590A1 shotgun for home protection, but we've decided to pay bills instead.

The usual suspects; Stevens, Breyer, Souter, and Ginsburg, still seem to have reading problems.

All liberals.

Then stay in Colorado. I don't know why you would try to disparage me because of the unabomber, while jumping down the throat of anyone who would try and do the same thing with Dr. Hatewhitey & B. Hussein Obama. Then there is the constant inconstistency with your comments about Limbaugh & Coulter, while at the same time not allowing the same thing from the other side. You are pretty offensive, for a guy who constantly cries about how racist & mean conservatives are. And I know you are going to say you were joking, but we'll let the readers decide. I don't care if you were joking or not, I think that comment, and the thin skin you exhibit when the shoe is on the other foot, [personal attack snipped].

This was an important and good decision by the Supreme Court. It's a victory for the citizens! I'm real happy about this!

Note that they also clarified that requiring trigger locks was unconstitutional! That was an important part of the case.

This doesn't end the gun control problem because citizens are still excessively limited in their ability to possess a weapon when traveling around the country and still must have a permit for concealed carry.

It was a close decision and the liberal members voted just as expected. The Court is still out of control and, overall, a big danger to the citizens.
