If your assertion is true, why do the democrats demonize anyone calling for pic. ID to vote? The answer is too obvious.

And if someone is too poor to afford a pic ID then God Bless them, but they must not be allowed to vote. These same people probably have several types of ID in order to get their welfare bennies. I'd bet the Dems will provide a way if it's mandated, as the poorest are misguidedly drawn to the Dems.

It's silly to require less ID to vote than what Movie Gallery requires to rent a DVD.

There are 8-10 legislators in Alabama who are holding up a "real" voter ID bill. (We have a completely emasculated waste of legislation that allows any piece of paper with my name printed on it to "count" as my "ID.") Every election in recent memory--these legislators receive huge absentee vote totals. Like I mentioned earlier...Greene County AL has had over 100% of the eligible voter population "vote" before--with absolutely no way to check the system for fraud.

Why in the world would anyone be against instituting a system that allows for fraud to be negated?

How many people that are eligible to vote have no photo ID whatsoever? I cannot believe that the number is anything but miniscule. And I'm willing for a few hundred of my tax dollars to pay for ID's for the indigent who wish to vote--if it's that important to them. Beats some of the other garbage my tax $$ pays for.

The problem is renting a DVD is not a right. The country is obligated to assure each citizens civil liberties are not denied. How do they do that? I don't know but it's why we pay them the big bucks (and turn our backs on their other activities).

I will say having a photo id can be the first step but not the final factor. If you are willing to prove your identity in another way (finger prints, dental records, DNA, who knows...) then I feel we should let them.

Neither is voting, unless you want to amend the Constitution.

I understand how confusing it is, but you are mistaken.

All your sources state that voting may not be denied for any of those reasons...
if an election is being held in which they do have the right to vote.

Nowhere does the Constitution grant the right to vote, period.

How can they assure or protect your right to vote if you have no right to vote? We must have a right or they are not protecting or assuring anything???

I'm all for legal immigration. I'm all for only US citizens voting. But I think it's dangerous to have to show the government your papers when you are doing something within your rights. It opens the door up to a mindset that we have seen in history that has brought many abuses to the law-abiding people. That's just my opinion, though.

OK that is great. But requiring a photo ID is not forbidding anyone from voting! It is just insuring their legitimate vote will not be negated by an illegal alien vote!

Every illegal vote cast negates a legitimate Americans vote! But of course this seems not to matter to some. In fact it is what some seem to be hoping for.:tonofbricks:

In this case the Supreme Court got it right and good for them!

I haven't seen Democrats demoninze anyone for calling for pic. ID to vote. Your rhetoric is too obvious.

If any picture ID at all is acceptable, why would you think that an illegal alien would not have one?

Poll taxes were ruled illegal long ago.

You would think more conservatives would hold that position.

In a perfect world we might. However, when the opposition party employs vote fraud as part of its basic election strategy, safeguards are called for. Besides, all the ID does is prove to the poll workers that you have the right to vote. When citizens have the right to do something, and non-citizen residents don't, how else are we to determine who has the right and who doesn't if people aren't required to prove who they are?
On the cost issue, perhaps those who are below the poverty line (or some other measure set up for voting purposes) could get an ID free as long as they sign an affidavit swearing that their income and assets are below the prescribed level for that composition of household. Signing such an affidavit with false information entered would result in criminal prosecution for perjury, of course. This would take care of the complaint that poor people couldn't afford an ID. Of course the Democrats would just find more grounds to oppose the ID requirement, since the more honest an election is, the fewer votes for Democrats will be recorded.

    That sounds fair.

That is contrary to facts. Both parties have engaged in election fraud. From the newsstories I've seen, illegal disenfranchisement and faulty electronic voting machines have affected far more elections than illegal aliens voting has. Does anyone have contrary evidence or just scare stories?

I wonder if the Republicans are going to try and blame any & all losses this time around on illegal aliens as a large part of their 2008 campaign....

But how do you prove it wrong? And what do you do about elections that are already complete? And will it be worth it to prosecute?

If cost is an issue, I would rather see us take some of the millions being wasted on government subsidies and put them toward this.

Yes, but the assumed prerequisite is that you prove you are one of the citizens who has the right to vote.

The opposition to Voter ID in Alabama came exclusively from the Democratic Party.

    Greene County, AL voter fraud.
    JUST one legal summary.

Attempts to deal with this were dismissed as "racist politics." Unfortunately, in places such as west Alabama, there was a time in which many whites acted despicably. Now, however, the overwhelmingly democratic, overwhelmingly African-american population are allowing voter fraud to permeate even the municipal elections.

I personally reported voter fraud back in the early 1990's. I worked at a healthcare facility for seniors in Indiana. On election day, Democratic volunteers (four or five identified themselves to me as such) came to the facility and checked out over half of the residents, including 20 of the 32 residents on the lock-down Alzheimer's unit. They were taken on a "field trip" (that was what was told to family). They were taken TO VOTE. The workers went with the residents to the booths and told them how to vote. I drove down to the precinct and observed this myself, after hearing from one of the lucid residents what was going on.

I reported this, in writing, to the local authorities. I was thanked for my concern, and nothing ever happened.

Think about it. The framers of the Constitution had no intention to grant the right to vote to every citizen. Ever hear of the Electoral College? Landowners only can vote? The Constitution has not been amended to grant that right to all citizens.

The turned the governing of elections over to the states.

Information is only valuable when it is restricted. Universally known information has no economic value.

It is not possible to have honest AND secret elections in a population of 350 million people. I propose that all voting citizens have names, DOB, and addresses posted on the web. County voting lists could be checked against the public list.
