Swimwear

This came up in another thread and it does raise some serious questions. While there is no call for the believer to refrain from swimming even in mixed groups, there is a call for modesty. By the way this should be for bother male and female.
The problem today is that many Christians seem to think that modesty depends on where you are not what you wear. If we go to the beach since we are surrounded by immodest people we seem to thing we can be like them or f we are especially pious to ourselves we cover a little more skin up but still live the day in immodesty. Following Christ means sometimes we have to set the standards instead of allowing the world to set our standards.
The issue is we have lost our understanding of what modest clothing really is and for this thread many have really lost any sense of modest swimwear. Here is a link to what I would consider modest swim wear. What are your thoughts?

I'd NEVER wear that stuff - it's ugly!

Here's the link to a bathing suit very similar to what I wear. The difference is that mine has black shorts instead of a printed skirt. I wear it into town as well when we're on the boat. OH - and my top definitely comes up higher than that.

I want a bathing suit that I would be comfortable wearing in front of my pastor and my dad. That narrows it down quite a bit. LOL

If I want to go swimming I'll do it in the privacy of my own back yard where it won't matter what sort swimming attire I wear. To go to the beach I wear a dress, even when I paddle in the waves.

Our granddaughters are taught that they're to wear either a long t-shirt or shorts over a modest bathing suit. I would not force them to wear something like you've suggested FAL...in Florida that is far too much spandex and polyester...you'd suffocate very quickly.

Modest doesn't always mean covered from neck to knees. Modesty is mainly an attitude. A modest woman knows that men's eyes wander and wants to keep their eyes on the face not the body. I'm sorry but that bathing suit would MAKE men stare at the oddity.

...I wonder how indigent people on some isolated South Pacific Island can possibly get saved? Why, they don't have padded pews; no carpet; no electricity; no choir loft; not even a baptistery..., they have to be baptized in the ocean for crying out loud. Their kids probably don't even have shoes to wear.

Nah - you get them saved then the Holy Spirit will convict them and cause them to spontaneously wear suits and ties/jumpers and ugly shoes.

Actually, I know people who do wear this swimwear because they are very prone to sunburn. It provides them better protection, so they say.

As far as being ugly perhaps but the issue is modesty not modeling or about being stylish, but those styles were to give examples of modest coverings and what modesty really is. If we can blend in as Christians in a godless world we probably are not honoring the Lord no matter what we are doing. It is not about doing just enough to satisfy the idea that we did something or are not as exposed as others. We should not be exposed at all.

There is just no reason to be showing cleavage of any sort or bare bellies, backs, or thighs nor so tight that it gives impressions if we want to be modest.
The idea of wearing shorts over the swim wear is a good one, I would suggest something like jeans cut off at the knees and a top with sleeves like an undershirt that cannot be seen through over the swimwear for guys and gals alike.

Decades ago, I spent many summer days on the beach (Daytona) in Florida. It was minutes from the family home; now I am old I regret the amount of sun taken in back then. I could spend days with no fear of sunburn - I was that tanned.

Back then, two piece were modest compared to what many single piece are in today's market.

More to the point of modesty; the most ridiculous view is one in which the amount of "skin" shown is what determines modesty. Bo Derrick had an a rather modest one piece when she came out of the water.

Folks, it isn't the amount of the suit (not speaking of money here) it is the drama of the curves the suit enhances!

Modesty should never be determined upon merely covering up skin. Rather, it is moving the focus from the curves of the trunk to the curves of the face. Most suits, even with a shirt covering, enhance curves the wet shirt clings. Why do you think men enjoy that kind of contest? I am not trying to be offensive, just the proof.

Teach the young woman that her greatest attributes are the eyes and voice.

It is rare that a young man's attention is not quickly drawn further by the voice and eyes of a pure woman. Those two attributes will establish more intrigue and mystery about a woman in a man's heart than any amount of skin and curves.

The choice of swimwear you suggest is proof that not only do others base modesty on the culture and location, but in fact you do also. Modesty is cultural, if you disagree try to wear those swimsuits in the middle east and see how modest they are. Or take them back in time to the 1800s and see. Modesty is a relative term. Many do not like to admit it, few accept it, but it is what it is.

The purpose of modest dress is to not entice someone of the opposite sex. If what we consider modest today accomplishes that fact, then all is well. You can't place hard rules on relevent terminology. By the way my hair is short. Unless of course you have a shaved head, in that case my hair is long.

That's the thing about a private locale ---- it's Murphey's Law. Just when you think nobody is within miles of that creek or pond, out from the bushes come the local wildlife and fisheries department give a tour of the reserve to the local law enforcement! LOL!

in all seriousness....any man who in his heart of hearts beleives that a woman should be dressed in that garish outfit just to go swimming needs to, himself, STAY AWAY from the beach and local swimming holes.

He has a problem that he has trouble controlling. I'm not condemning his heart, but just stating what I feel.

I recall hearing stories of how some preachers back in the 1940s -1950s would rant and rave about the "sin" of men wearing colored shirts.

I guess these preachers didn't have enough time to spend on preaching what is really "the whole counsel of God."

I also grew up on the beach in Florida, and after you see literally thousands of women in bikinis it is not that big a deal. In fact, there are many women who should not wear bikinis that do.
