I notice you use the word "doubt" in your assumption. A lot of people call themselves "Christian" however, "in works they deny Hih", Titus 1"16.

Of course I use the word "doubt." With 13,000 members there may be one that denies one of these truths.

Just because one is critical of Dr Smith it is no indication that that he denies these things as you stated in your first comment about hyper-liberals. Your change to expressing this view as your thoughts instead of a blanket statement is noted and appreciated. At least now it is your thoughts and not a statement.

I know nothing of Dr Smith. I used to read the Sword and keep in touch with the group in Murfreesboro, but have not had any contact in years.

I did persuse the latest issue on line and must say to does seem like it has changed mush to me.

Heh, heh, C4K. Had to laugh at your slip of the thumb there- 'changed mush'. Put a 'to' in the middle and that's about right.

Everything I write here is "my comments" or "my thoughts", however doesn't make them any less a statement. What I am trying to do is show some here how liberal the Baptist have gotten. Take David Innes and George Dollar, John Rice, Bob Jones, Harry Ironsides, James Stewart, M.R.DeHaan, Lehman Strauss and many others who have written on many of the subjects discussed on BB. Most on this board have no idea who these men are however if the truth would be known every one of these men would be labeled a hyper-fundamentalist by the writers on BB. I am not trying to be abrasive. Iam just trying to show that WE have become the very thing Paul wrote Timothy about in ITim.4:1 & IITim.4:3

I disagree that "we" have become hyper-liberals in our theology.

You tend, Shiloh, to treat the BB as a corporate body rather than what it is; a community of individuals. You and I are both contributors to that body. The use of phrasee like "hyper-liberal" as a generic description are indeed abrasive. Claiming that "most" members do not know these men is unfounded. Claiming that most would see them as "hyper-fundementalists" is also unfounded.

The range here is broad. I am sure there are a few hyper-fundamentalists and a few hypper-liberals here. The VAST majority fall somewhere in between.

Instead of judging those who disagree with Dr Smith of being hyper-liberals, perhaps time would be better spent defending him and his views with facts and quotes.

That is hyper-liberalism? I thought that was mainstream liberal theology.

As a matter of fact, I cannot find the words Hyper Liberal in Wikipedia or Google. What is the difference between a mainstream liberal theologian and a hyper liberal theologian?

I am not understanding what such wanton insults against Dr. Smith do to SEPARATE the character flaws accused from the character flaws exuded! What is the use of little dogs sitting behind the window and sniping at the big dogs GOING BY on the sidewalk? I do not agree with all the nastiness in the SOTL these days, but I am not going to sit around and arrogantly chuck insluts either. Why can't we stick to insightful, constructive criticism?

blanket comments without any substantiation do not need to be made. The Sword of the Lord is in our church bookstore and free copies go out every week. We are IFB KJV only

    Jarhead,

I agree. One may not agree with the views of Dr. Smith, but no one can deny his fire for the Lord, especially if you have ever met him in person. I grew up at COD, in Westminster, and I have learned a great deal from Dr. Smith. He is very passionate about his beliefs, and although, I do not agree with everything he says, I respect his love for the Lord. What preacher is perfect? For that matter, what man, or woman, is perfect? I do not even consider myself IFB anymore, but I still respect Dr. Smith. He is very passionate about his beliefs, but who isn't? We even subscribe to SOTL. When writing our latest film, they were a great resource for my husband. With that being said, all the "you're a hyper-liberal" or "you're a hyper-conservative" name calling is ridiculous and childish, IMO. When is the last time anyone has read a newspaper or magazine, Christian or not, where they have agreed with absolutely everything in it? How does calling another brother, in the Lord, arrogant or self-centered, benefit anyone? Pointing out why, or why not, you believe the SOTL has changed, for better or worse, is one thing, but some of this other nonsense takes it to a whole other level. If you don't like how it has changed, contact SOTL and let them know. Better yet, don't read it.

    Look Folk,

I was just carrying on a bit just to be a little agitating. I don't like some of the stuff that is put forth from the ole SOL. Yet, I still browse through it. Alot of times there are some good sermons to read in there along with some of the quotes. Also, the section that deals with the news all around us is not so bad. It does have its problems though. Yet I would have to say my views and convictions lean more the way of the SOL and those folk than of those who subscribe to Christianity Today. A whole lot more to say the least. I just get frustrated with some of the extras that some want to tack on to Fundamentalism at times. Put it this way if I had to choose between going to a leadership conf. at Willowcreek or Saddleback and going to the SOL national meeting. I'm going to the SOL meeting at Gospel Light Baptist. Down in God's country which happens to be North Carolina.

Liking or not liking the Sword of the Lord is not the measure of fundamentalism.

Is it not the belief within the fundamental circles that even a little leaven ruins the whole lump? Well then please explain why the KJV only crowd is not "seperated" from in fundamental circles. The Sword, endorses a belief that cannot be supported by even one letter of scripture yet we are to give them the benefit of the doubt because Smith is/was (whatever) a nice man with good intentions???!!! You could not get anymore liberal then that if you stood up and denied the virgin birth of Jesus!

If the Sword wants to gain readers, which I would argue they don't, it is much easier playing the persecuted martyr role, then perhaps not adding to scripture would be a good place to start!

    Go2Church,

No one said you have to endorse SOTL, or Dr. Smith. I don't care one iota whether you read it or don't. I was just pointing out the unfruitfullness of calling each other names, and calling Dr. Smith arrogant and self-centered over a difference in theological issues. If that makes me liberal, so be it.

Relax Film, I wasn't addressing your comments. And for the record supporting and believing that the KJV is the only English Bible is not a difference in theological issues, it is adding to the Word of God!
