My quote should have said "add 25%", not "at 25%".

Who says that it's not more fair for these kids to have jobs than not have jobs?

First, if you are referring to the kids in the OP, they do not have "jobs".

Here's a wiki definition that these children do not meet:

"Employment is a contract between two parties, one being the employer and the other being the employee. In a commercial setting, the employer conceives of a productive activity, generally with the intention of creating profits, and the employee contributes labour to the enterprise, usually in return for payment of wages. " - (Source: http://www.google.com/url?sa=X&star...mics)&usg=AFQjCNGtr3-QKqQA5nwQP1ZXCdlOtbwBgg)

Here's dictionary.com...
job1 /dʒɒb/ Pronunciation Key - Show Spelled Pronunciation[job] Pronunciation Key - Show IPA Pronunciation noun, verb, jobbed, job·bing, adjective
–noun
1. a piece of work, esp. a specific task done as part of the routine of one's occupation or for an agreed price: She gave him the job of mowing the lawn.

Here's American Heritage...

job 1 (jŏb) Pronunciation Key
n.
1. A regular activity performed in exchange for payment, especially as one's trade, occupation, or profession.

According to Wal-mart these kids are "volunteers" and there is no agreed payment for the services these volunteers render.

Dictionary.com...
vol·un·teer /ˌvɒlənˈtɪər/ Pronunciation Key - Show Spelled Pronunciation[vol-uhn-teer] Pronunciation Key - Show IPA Pronunciation
–noun
1. a person who voluntarily offers himself or herself for a service or undertaking.

The children are not doing anything in exchange for payment. They are volunteering their services and if the customer they perform services for on behalf of Wal-mart decides to, they will give the Wal-Mart volunteer a gratuity.

Dictionary.com...

gra·tu·i·ty /grəˈtuɪti, -ˈtyu-/ Pronunciation Key - Show Spelled Pronunciation[gruh-too-i-tee, -tyoo-] Pronunciation Key - Show IPA Pronunciation
–noun, plural -ties.
1. a gift of money, over and above payment due for service, as to a waiter or bellhop; tip.

Yet, even this is not completely accurate for a gratuity is over and above payment due for service and there is no payment due for this service since they are volunteering. Also, note that they use waiters and bellhops as examples and waiters and bellhops have jobs for they get paid.

By this definition, I don't have a "job" when I make stained glass windows.

Does that mean I'm not gainfully employed?

BTW, I did work for a delivery service when I worked in DC that was paid entirely on tips. I made some really good money.

But, I guess I didn't have a job.

agree and disagree

1) May God grant you eyesight and understanding so that you can actually be literate

Its not WALMART - its a walmart subsidiary/partner - thats why they would have baggers - also i dont know about you americans but up here in Canada they are expanding the walmarts to have a full grocery store - not the 5-10 aisles they had before. But on rare busy days they actually had people doing bagging for the customer that got paid - but usually they were cashiers whose tills were down or other dept's staff

2) Hope of glory - you realllllly need to think before you post - trust me I know this - I've done it too - because in your stained glass scenario - you ARE the company - unless yer leaving out details

3) lets face it Mexico sucks - letting kids do this is actually a good thing - yes the Walmart subsidiary is not necessarily an angel in this - but they doing a good thing - yes it could be better - but lets face facts they didnt have to do even this scrap of a good thing

It's not illegal to employ teenagers, and a lot of people work for tips only. They probably earn more in tips then they could doing any other legal job there. As long as they aren't forced into labor it isn't exploitation. If wal mart is working within the laws of that country, then theres no real problem with wal mart, if you don't like it, then it's the country that needs to change it's laws to prevent teenagers from learning to work for their money instead of stealing for a living, which is more the custom in countries like Mexico among the poor.

Not according to some of the nonsense Im reading here.

It seems that some here have a problem with self employment and don't understand the opportunities one is afforded when they work for themselves.

It further seems they have forgotten, if they ever knew, what truly made the U.S. the economic power it is.

Entrepreneurship. Something these Young Mexicans already understand. It's also doubtful they want the sympathies of self appointed do gooders.

A fact the liberals really care nothing about!!

Most people would love for the liberals to simply mind their own business and leave everybody else alone.

Oh, and MY safety & well being are NOT the liberals business even if they really do "CARE".

My comment was aimed specifically at the definition given earlier.

By that definition, I don't have a job.

Neither did I have a job when I worked entirely on gratuity.

Do you have a problem with the assumption of a moral mandate to be fair in one's dealings?

What is the standard for fair with regards to walmarts business dealings? What source outside of oursleves mandates such a standard?

The bottom line is these teens would not otherwise be working at all. And now they are. It also has gone a long way to improve their financial situation. The error made here is to apply American standards in Mexico.
