Texas Gov. Rejects Stimulus Money for Unemployment

HOUSTON - Texas Gov. Rick Perry on Thursday rejected $555 million in federal stimulus money that would expand state unemployment benefits, saying the money would have required the state to keep funding the expanded benefits after the stimulus money ran out. Perry, an outspoken critic of President Barack Obama's $787 billion stimulus bill, did accept most of the roughly $17 billion slated for Texas in the plan.

But he said the requirements attached to the federal stimulus money would require a change in the state's definition of unemployment, expanding coverage to more people and placing more of the state's tax burden on employers.

"During these tough times, Texas employers are working harder than ever to move products to market, make payroll and create jobs," Perry said at a news conference. "The last thing they need is government burdening them with higher taxes and expanded obligations."

It was a good decision.

IMO the hidden agenda here is to expand Federal powers as far as they can.

They are planning on taking over health care and I can't wait to see what they are planning to do with education.

George Orwell was right - he just got the year wrong.

I applaud the Govs like Perry and Jindal who are looking at the big picture. You can't create a future boondoggle just to throw extra money around now (ask Gov. Ahnuld in Cal how it worked for them)

Typical GOP grandstanding. Perry punishes unemployed Texans to make a political play. Way to go.

Gov. Perry is looking out for all Texans. Why shackle ourselves to spending we don’t agree with, AND that is ultimately bad for all Texans.

Thanks for taking a stand Gov. Perry!

God Bless Texas!

I'm not a Rick Perry fan, but this is a really good decision.

I only wish he would have turned down the entire 17 billion, but then it would have just been given to the brain dead democrat dominated legislatures of places like California and New York for them to waste.

Texas will put the money to good use to remain one of the top state economys with the lowest taxes in the country.

They are following Governor Sanford's lead.

If you lived in Texas, were unemployed, and were running out of unemployment would you applaud it? remember, Obama didn't get us into this crisis. Bush did. Obama is trying to get us out. By the way, what happened to that huge recovery fund that Bush funded (TARP)? What has come out of that for the good?

I wish Texas would use that $19 billion to put the Texas National Guard on the border, this time with loaded guns.

If that's the hidden agenda then it was the previous administration that had it as a goal. This crisis started under Bush. Obama is trying to get us out of it.

In reality [Which I know you don't like to face JC.] Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, and the democrat Congress, with the help of ACORN, caused the housing crisis; selling houses to people who could not afford them.

O'bama is only digging the hole deeper and deeper. Does he want to bankrupt the country?

Obama is making it worse.

While he wastes trillions of dollars on pork barrel and make work projects for temporary workers, the recession deepens and all economic indicators point to a downward trend and because of his declared war on business, the stock market continues to decline.

Obama is a socialist ideologue who either doesn't have a clue how this economy works , or doesn't care ,and believes good moves have to take a back seat to his socialist agenda.

Is it even possible, JC, for you to post ANYTHING that doesn't blame Bush for "this" (whatever "this" is a for that particular thread) problem???????????

He sure had his faults that are valid criticisms of his administration, but your constant harping on every screw-up of the government being his fault is a little childish.

Equally naive/juvenile is your constant slobbering over his majesty, the big "0", as though he has never done, nor can do, ANY wrong!

Maybe you should go outside and play in your sandbox and leave the discussions to adults.:BangHead:

Why didn't Obama just provide the additional unemployment funds without requiring States to change their unemployment rules out past the duration of the funds?

Hint - THEY WANT TO CONTROL EVERYONE AND EVERYTHING

Jimmy Carter? Totally ridiculous. I don't like to face reality? You don't even know what it is.

Below is the start of the current economic crisis caused by subprime mortgages.

"Community Reinvestment Act

The Community Reinvestment Act is intended to encourage depository institutions to help meet the credit needs of the communities in which they operate, including low- and moderate-income neighborhoods, consistent with safe and sound operations. It was enacted by the Congress in 1977 (12 U.S.C. 2901) and is implemented by Regulation BB (12 CFR 228). The regulation was substantially revised in May 1995, and was most recently amended in August 2005.

Evaluation of CRA Performance
The CRA requires that each depository institution's record in helping meet the credit needs of its entire community be evaluated periodically. That record is taken into account in considering an institution's application for deposit facilities."

I agree with you here, I would like to see them remove the stipulation to continue the increased benefits after the Federal money runs out. I like the idea of extending benefits because of the crises. However, a permanent increase might encourage folks to remain on the system until the benefits run out. This would not apply to the average American who don't feel right getting a free check but we know there are that few who would milk the system for all they can.

The requirement in a permanent change in government policy shows none of this is a stimulus but an under the table attempt to make permanent change in an unprecedented direction.
