I would never live in Dallas Dr. B. The traffic is horrible. Here, people cut you off if you're going too slow. There, they cut you off to keep you from speeding. I can't stand driving up there.
I'm much more at home down here where the speed limit is 60mph in the city, but the cops won't stop unless you're going over 80, especially true on I-10. (Lori, you know what I'm talking about)
Seriously, I couldn't imagine living anywhere else. I'm 5th generation Texan and proud of it. Texas really is like a whole other country. We have everything from deserts, to mountains, to hills, to plains, to coasts, and more. There is something for everyone. If you like cold winters, live in the panhandle. If you like hot, moist summers, live in Houston...also good if you're not too into the ice and snowy winter scene. If you like a mixture of the two, you can live in Dallas.
Texas is still one of the few places where people will slow down and drive on the shoulder, on two lane roads, in order for faster traffic to pass. We always wave when someone does this too. We don't measure distance in miles, but in minutes or hours.
We're not afraid to excercise our 2nd Amendment rights and have, I believe, the highest per capita gun ownership/concealed carry guns of any state in the country.
We're not afraid to execute killers based on political correctness. Until recent years, it was almost impossible to tell our Democrat politicians from Republicans; both groups were southern conservatives.
we have the best college football players in the country, even though most of them attend schools in Oklahoma and Arkansas.
We have most of the U.S. oil refineries, plus a good chunk of U.S. oil production. One of the reasons why when the rest of the country suffers from high gas prices, we tend to do really well.
I love the uniqueness of our history. The bravery shown by those at the Alamo, and by Gen. Houston and his men at San Jacinto in the defeat of Santa Ana, which took about 18 minutes.
I love the fact that Galveston was the last port of the CSA to still be in Confederate hands when the war ended. I believe the U.S. had captured it once and once re-captured they never again held it during the war. Bravery.
I absolutely love the fact that you can drive 5 miles out of ANY major city in Texas and be in the countryside with cattle ranches and family farms.(There are still some within the Houston city limits as well)
I love the fact that we ive by our own way of life and don't bow down to any power, other than God, from outside of this state. We don't follow anyone or anything except what we feel is right.
I could never leave. This is my home, and Lord willing always will be.
As the song goes, 'God blessed Texas with His own hands.'
PS Aside from the fact that we do indeed believe that ours is the best state of the Union, we also are some of the nicest bunch in the good ole USA, unless you get on our bad side. We will actually stop and render assistance to others, even those we've never met, when they're in peril.
God Bless the USAA and the state of Texas.
