NEW YORK -- NEW YORK (AP) — The stock market is closing sharply lower as budget gridlock in Washington brings the U.S. closer to a default on its debt.

The impasse over the government shutdown and raising the country's borrowing limit showed no signs of breaking Tuesday.

House Republicans have insisted that any temporary funding bill contain concessions on President Barack Obama's health care law.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index closed down 20 points, or 1.2 percent, to close at 1,655.45. It was the 11th loss in the last 14 days, and the index's biggest drop in six weeks.

The Dow Jones industrial average was down 159 points, or 1.1 percent, to 14,776.53.

The Nasdaq composite fell 75 points, or 2 percent, to 3,694.83, also the largest drop in six weeks.

Why do you blame just the republicans?

Simple. They were opposing Obamacare and when the House Republicans saw they could not win that one then went to an unrelated issue and have kidnapped the country's economic welfare for their own political gains ... or what the believe is their gain. They are willing to push the country over the edge of a cliff resulting in a worldwide depression that will be as bad if not worse than the one begun in 1929. No concession will please them, they will just up the ante.

I understand their problem. They have painted themselves into a corner and are in a panic trying to get out.

This is where his response should have stopped. The premier Marixist law recently passed.

Rather stupid rely Rev. If it were Marxist the insurance companies would have been nationalized and would not exist. They are part of the game and still exist ... so it isn't Marxist.

Again you show you have no understanding of Marxism.

Their intent is to use this as a tool to nationalize it by their own admission. So good luck with your denial.

Show me where anyone in the administration has proposed nationalizing any industry, insurance or otherwise. You can't as they have not. So, start being honest.

Dishonest Rev. no nationalization in those. Single payer does not nationalize the insurance industry.
Oh, for the luvva ...

A single-payer system would eliminate private insurance companies and put a Medicare-like system into place where the government pays all health-care bills with tax dollars.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D., Nev.) was asked whether his goal was to move Obamacare to a single-payer system. His answer? “Yes, yes. Absolutely, yes.”

In one sense, this isn’t shocking. Reid and many other Democrats, including President Obama, have often stated that their ideal health-care system is one in which the government abolishes the private insurance market.

Great Pretender said:
I happen to be a proponent of a single-payer universal health care plan. The United States of America is the wealthiest country in the history of the world. There's no reason spending 14% of its gross national product can't provide basic health insurance for everybody. And that's we're talking about when we say "Everybody in, nobody out," in a single-payer health care plan, a universal health care plan. And that's what I'd like to see."

To nationalize means both single payer and single receiver ... the government. Try again Rev. You continue to show your ignorance of Marxism.

I blame the Republicans/Democrats about 60/40. The Republicans were warned by Obama that he would not negotiate ACA at the government shutdown deadline. The Republicans should have started pressing for meetings over the budget back in July. Insisted upon it. Threatened to walk out of the Capitol in a show of unity if Obama didn't meet with them. They could have seized the publicity advantage, but they are so clueless that they let another opportunity slip away.

They all should have been working on this. Until recently no one side was more to blame. Now Obama is. He needs to shut up and sit down at the table with the GOP regardless of what he has said. When he said he would not do it he was wrong them and wrong now.

It is fruitless to negotiate with kidnappers. They are never satisfied. They will always want more and more and more.
