Since the angel of the LORD is the Lord Jesus and Jesus is God it follows that the angel of the LORD is God.
1. The Hebrew word for angel means "messenger" (mal'ak). It could refer to supernal beings (Psalm 148:2) or to people (Joshua 7:22).
2. This messenger states, "I am the God of Bethel" (Genesis 31:13).
3. No one has seen the Father (John 6:46).
4. The angel of the LORD has a distinct personality from YHWH (2 Samuel 24:16; cf. 1 Chronicles 21).
5. The angel of the LORD is addressed in prayer (Genesis 48:16).
- Jacob credited the Angel for redeeming him from all evil.
- Jacob asked the Angel to bless Joseph's children.
- Jacob asked the Angel to cause his descendants to grow into a multitude.
