THE ANGELS.
Angels of the Lord very often mentioned in the Bible. They figure in the Bible under different types and under different names and descriptions. Who actually they are? According to Biblical texts, they are all servants of the Lord, good and bad alike.
Angels serve not only GOD but they serve also and humans.
Hebrews 1.14
14."Are they (angels) not all ministering spirits, sent out to render service for the sake of those who will inherit salvation?"
I think the very first angel was mentioned in Genesis called as Cherubim. In the verse below Cherubim depicted as a guardian angel.
Genesis 3.24
24."He (GOD) drove out the man, and at the east of the garden of Eden He placed the CHERUBIM and a sword flaming and turning to guard the way to the Tree of Life."
Cherubims also depicted in the Bible as two angles made of gold on the top of the Ark of the Covenant, above them GOD appeared to the high priest on certain occasions.
The Bible also mentioned certain SERAPHS.
Isaiah 6.2-3.5-7
2.SERAPHS (angels) were in attendance above Him, each had six wings, with two they covered their faces, and with two they covered their feet, and with two they flew.
It is hard to tell what the different between Seraphs and other angels. But it seems that Seraphs some kind of unusual angels who have many wings.
MESSENGERS. Angels also serve as messengers to deliver the Word of GOD to individuals and to the group of people (Genesis 16.7-13, 21.17-18. Hagar) (Genesis 31.11-13, 32.1-2. Jacob) (Exodus 3.2, Acts 7.30. Moses) (Numbers 22.22-27.31-35. Balaam) (Judges 2.1-5. Israel) (Judges 6.11.23. Gideon) (Judges 13.3-7.9-20. Manoah and his wife) (1Kings 19.5-8. Elijah) (2Kings 1.3-4.15. Elijah) (Daniel 9.20-27. Angel Gabriel) (Zechariah 1.9-14.18-19, 2.1-5, 3.1-7, 4.1-14, 5.5-11, 6.4-6).
(Matthew 1.20-21, 2.13.19-20, 28.1-8, Mark 16.5-7 Joseph and Mary) (Luke 1.11-20.26-38. Angel Gabriel, Zachariah, and Mary) (Luke 2.8-15.21. Shepherds) (Luke 24.1-9. Two women in the tomb of Christ) (John 20.11-13. Mary) (Acts 1.10-11. Men of Galilee) (Acts 8.26. Philip) (Acts 10.1-8.22. Cornelius)
PUNISMENT AND DESTRUCTION. Angels also serve the Lord as a tool of destruction (Genesis 19.1-26. Sodom and Gomorrah) (2Samuel 24.16, 1Chrosnicles 15.18. Jerusalem) (2Kings 19.35, 2Chronicles 32.20-21, Isaiah 37.36. Assyrians) (Acts.12.21-23. Herod)
Psalm 78.49
49."He sent upon them His burning anger, fury, and indignation, and trouble, a band of *destroying angels." (KSB).
KJV, Russian - "evil angels."
NRSV, ESV - "a company of destroying angels."
NIV - "a band of destroying angels."
Gideons - "angels of destruction."
GNB - "He caused them great distress by pouring His anger and fierce range, which came as messengers of death."
SAVIORS. In this instance angel appeared to Abraham to stop him from killing his son Isaac (Genesis 22.11-12.15-18). Here angel spoke to Abraham in the name of GOD. It would be no mistake to assume or suggest that the Angel of GOD Who spoke to Abraham and to other individuals actually was Jesus Christ, because He is also a Servant of His Father GOD.
Daniel 3.24-25.28. Appearance of the Angel to Nebuchadnezzar. Daniel and his friends saved by the Angel of GOD.
25."He answered and said, "Look! I see four men losses and walking about in the midst of the fire without harm, and the appearance of the forth is like *a son of the gods!" (KSB, NIV, ESV)
NRSV: "and the fourth has the appearance of a god."
GNB: "and a fourth one looks like an angel."
KJV, Gideons, Russian: "and a fourth looks like as a Son of GOD."
LIBERATORS.
(Acts 5.17-20. Imprisoned Apostles of Christ) (Acts 12.7-10. Peter)
SOLDIERS.
(Revelation 12.7-9. War in Heaven between Angel Michael and Dragon).
HEALERS.
(John 5.2-4. pool Bethzatha)
GUIDES. Here GOD sent His Angel to guide Israel in the desert and issued a warning (Exodus 23.20-23, 32.34, 33.2) (Numbers 20.16).
Exodus 23.20-21
20."I am going to send an Angel in front of you to guard you on the way and to bring you to the place that I have prepared.
21.Pay attention to Him and listen to His voice, do not rebel against Him, He will not pardon your wrong, My name is in Him." (Exodus 32.34, 33.2) (Numbers 20.16).
The words, "My name is in Him" relate only to Jesus Christ, and the name of that Angel is GOD. Jesus Christ is the Image of GOD in His full Being, and so Jesus is also GOD, the Angel-GOD Who represents GOD in His Own Being. Jesus is the Creation of GOD-Father, Jesus has beginning but no end.
GUARDIANS?
Matthew 18.1-10-14
10."Take care that you do not despise one of these little ones, I tell you, in Heaven their angels continually see the face of My Father in Heaven."
A half of Matthew 18 talks about children and humble men. Matthew make good comparison between innocent children and humble adults, both kinds are submissive, gentle, compliant, and meek.
What then these words mean, "their angels." Are they guardian angels of children and humble men? Or may be the souls of children and humble men see or will see the face of GOD in Heaven? Is it right to call humans as angels?
HUMANS BECAME ANGELS AFTER DEATH.
Luke 20.35-36
35.but those who are considered worthy of a place in that age and in the resurrection from the dead, neither marry nor are given in marriage.
36.Indeed, they cannot die anymore, because they are like angels, and are children of GOD, being children of the resurrection."
(Matthew 22.23-30) (Mark 12.18-25) (Luke 20.27-36)
Do we have right judge fallen angels?
1Corinthians 6.3
3."Do you not know that we are to judge angels, to say nothing of ordinary matters?"
ANGELS OF ABYSS.
Revelation 9.11
11."They have as king over them the angel of the abyss, his name in Hebrew is *Abaddon, and in the Greek he has the name *Apollyon."
("Abaddon and Apollyon." These names translated as "Destroyer," most likely means as destroyer of life.)
Revelation of John mentioned numerous angels who performed many different functions and duties, but it will be impossible to mention all of it here on this page.
"To the angel of the church..." Revelation 2.1.8.12.18. NIV explained as "messenger."
One particular Bible in one church, the type of the Bible I do not remember, read in those places of Revelation not " to the angels of the church" but "to the servants of the church." I like this last translation better, because it precisely indicates the matter and definition of the word angels, which in actuality means servant.
Assuming that angels have no gender, the Bible on the other hand usually depicts angels as males. But in some places of the Bible we can find also and female angels.
Zechariah 5.9
9.Then I lifted up my eyes and looked, and there two women were coming out with the wind in their wings, and they had wings like the wings of a stork, and they lifted up the ephah between the Earth and the heavens.
I believe that description of angels by their gender presented for us to better understand the nature of angels and events their involved in. Same thing can be said about GOD Who always presented to us as a Male, but in reality I thing that GOD has no actual gender.
