The Battle for the Lords Day worship...

I am looking for a job and it amazes me how many employers will not accommodate ones religious convictions. I mean some jobs they need sunday workers and thats to be expected. But non vital industries there should be no need to work on a sunday or to not accommodate one to worship. Had a interview monday for a sales job and they wanted someone to work every sunday 9-7pm which means I would miss both services at church. I said I could work everyday but Sunday, and he said they could accommodate but I got the gist of what he meant by that, and usually employers will reluctantly hire someone and then let him go for "performance" issues without a reason as their way around the law. So my goal is to aim for jobs that do not operate on the Lords day, or if I were to work in security or so, to work on sundays but once a month or so, or perhaps after church.

I know that Dr. Kent Hughes wrote a very inspiring chapter on this topic in his book Disciplines of a Godly Man. Yes its a Calvinistic perspective so some of you will take an issue with that. So what say you how do you do your battle for the Lords day worship?

Christians should honor the Lord's Day to give glory to God. Sadly in the society that we live in there are many churchless Christians that live their lives without accountability, discipline, discipleship, and live as individuals rather than as the collective church body (1 Cor. 12, Rom. 12). Many churchgoers believe and worship God, yet reject the mothership of the church.[2] Church attendance is on the decline in many parts of the world. Since the late 1960’s, Americans have become 10 percent less likely to become a member of a church somewhere, and some 25-50 percent less likely to be regularly involved in the ministry of a church.[3] I personally have been in churches where the teaching was so far from a true gospel that its no wonder that most there were not growing in the Lord, and consequently had an unbiblical view of the Lord’s Day. I don’t doubt for a second that in the coming years more and more Christians won’t be attending church on a regular basis. God’s people should not only be members and tithers but also contributors and givers to the church. In Eph 2:10, Paul writes “For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” We are not saved by good works, but saved to do them. God put the church on this earth to be the light of the world (Mt 5:14) the salt of the earth (Mt 5:13), and the redemptive force in the culture (Jn 17:18). By serving the body of Christ on the day of worship, in one sense believers are doing the good works, which God has prepared for his people. How can followers of Christ serve and minister to the world if serving the church is not a priority?

No one would hire someone with the intention of firing them later. They hire people they think will generate them a profit.

You are correct. If one can not work when I would need them, the job I would be offering, wouldn't be for them. Keep in mind, the job isn't your, it is mine and I allow you to fill it. A job has to serve or should serve for the good of the employee and employer.
I see so many folks who don't want to work on the Lord' Day but wants to go to a restaurant to eat, something about that just does not add up.

Are there Scriptures that tell us what we can and can't do on a Sunday? I don't know of any unless you decide that we ought to follow the OT but apply it to a new day.

We are to worship seven days a week, not one. I am a pastor so I work every Sunday, right along with the other six days of the week, with the occasional Saturday off.

I will work 6 days, rest 1 day

I will not forsake assembling of believers together

I recognize that there are "contingencies" that might demand ^^ be suspended (ox fall in ditch or pipe burst in basement)

I will give honest work for honest remuneration and be faithful/loyal worker for the one who hired me

I will reflect and witness for God in my work

I will find fulfillment in work in providing for my family, doing a job hired to do, and glorifying God

I will not be employed in a job that impacts my spiritual walk negatively nor stops me from my Divinely-mandated ministry to society

Its pretty near impossible to find jobs on this economy (and especially those who dont want you enslaved to them--with Sunday work sometimes being the deal-maker if you refuse) with all due respect, the Lord knows your heart & your circumstances. And as Mex says, everyday is the Lords day. so do what you have to do, this economy wont last forever. Soon we will throw these bums out & put men in who have moral perpetuate & the intellect to run a country the way it should be run. Until then pray hard & be in the Lord.... He takes care of His own.

Since alcoholics has been declared a disease everyone is staying drunk, check please.

Very well said friend. I had another interview today and they were about to hire me until they told me they would require me to work every sunday mid shift so I would miss both church services. I said I could work some sundays (1 a month) but I am committed to serving the Lord on that day. Yes I will do street evangelism on sunday because I am serving the Lord. Its too bad because I could have a job today, but the wife agrees to continue my job hunt. Lots of jobs in Denver, CO so one is to turn up soon. But if it came down to it, I would rather be in collections over compromising the Lords day. Thank you for your advice brother. So many Christians these days do not care about serving God on sunday and it saddens me.

I would suggest those on this forum whom think its okay for a Christian to work in a secular job (non ministry) every sunday to read the following books.

Actually for the last 6 years I have worked in jobs that did not require sunday work. Yes they are harder to find, but if it came down to it I'll take the collections calls over compromising the day of worship. Its not that I refuse to work sundays, its that I refuse to work every sunday each month. I also refuse to work a job where I would miss both services.

The Puritans

Did anyone know that if it were not for the puritans there would be no sabbath day rest laws? They are the ones that fought and enforced laws. If not so employers would require them to work 7 days a week!
